China reverses decision on Pfizer's Viagra patent
The Chinese regulatory body has revoked the patent it had awarded to Pfizer for its erectile-dysfunction drug Viagra after receiving pressure from domestic pharmaceutical companies.
8 Jul 2004, 17:03 GMT - Chinese based drug makers succeeded in their attempts to remove the Viagra patent after arguing that information on the drug's active ingredient, sildenafil citrate, did not adequately fulfill 'novelty requirement' required to achieve Chinese patent approval.
The decision to revoke the patent was taken by the Chinese State Intellectual Property Office, who claimed that more than ten domestic companies complained obliging it to reconsider the patent details. Pfizer had originally been awarded the patent in 2001 and is believed to be extremely concerned by the move.
