Looking for suggestions for an itinerary. Will have a rental car, and will be touring during first week of august. not sure what goes on out there but would like to see Gros Morne park, other than that, any route suggestions, places to stay, etc.

how much can be seen in 9 days? do i need to book accomodations ahead of time...B&B's or can i take it on the fly (my preference)?

Not into the cities at all, small towns and scenic ops like all those commercials are my main interest.

thanks

it depends how much timeyou plan to stay in St Johns, not to be missed. It's not that big a province. The Avalon Peninsula, L'anse aux Meadows and Gros Morne, all different, are not that far a way from St John's

It took me about 2 & 1/2 days to drive from St. Anthony's (L'Anse aux Medows) to St. John's. Lots of trees and rocks and then some interesting stuff followed by more trees and rocks. If you have time, check out Gander, Terra Nova National Park (the aquarium there is worth the stop), and the Beaumont-Humel war memorial/museum at Signal Hill. Watch out for moose.

One night in St. John's. Spend it on George Street. Think of it as a cleaner, friendlier Bourbon Street.

Tablelands near Deer lake, Woodyville, Bonaventure, Dildo

Not much in Gander. Easy to drive from St Johns and back in 9 days.

Watch out for mileage limits. All the airport car rentals have pretty low daily mileage limits. I know Enterprise on Kenmount road is an exception, they have unlimited.

Spend a few days in St John's, Signal Hill, George Street for the bars. Water and Duckworth for the downtown. The last three are walkable. The harbourfront. although it is after my time, I think all the museumish stuff is in "the Rooms". Used to be a few others around RMC, Railroad that might be worth the look. It isn't a big place.
A drive north pass to and past Torbay is not bad, and not far at all. I used to like driving up around there and back from Portugal Cove.

A drive around Conception bay and back down along Trinity bay is worth the 300 km and will take you past Dildo. Stop into Hogans for the Fish and Chips or Chicken and Chips in Northern bay. Western bay is nice, or the bay is, but if you down know the place you will not be able to get down to it as it is not marked. Ches's fish and chips in St John's has the rep or at least it used to. Nothing in Dildo but you gotta go there once, close to the Trans Canada highway.
Some nice scenery south of Argentia. [South of Dildo]
A drive to Trinity or Bonivista isn't out of place if you want to see more small outports. Not really worth stopping anywhere though.

I'd skip most of the other around the bay trips, more of the same. Terra Nova isn't worth it, anyhow you will pass it on the main highway.
Gander might have some decent air stuff if that is your bag, but keep in mind that outside of St John's every other town will be small, 20K for Corner Brook, less than 10 elsewhere.
There is a museum IIRC somewhere around Grand Falls/Windsor about the local Indians the Beotuks. Both are again along the TCH.

A drive to Bay_d'Espoir might be worth it if you love miles of nothingness. [I do]

Gros Morne is the most epic of parks, probably worth an extra day. You can stay at Deer Lake I guess or Corner Brook [Again along the TCH]
Worth a visit.

You could go all the way to St Anthony, but 1: It is a long way up, 2: There is nothing much along the way but lots of moose, hitting a moose is a bad idea and 3: The Viking Settlement is way overhyped. If you got time to kill, meh why not, but I wouldn't add a day to my trip to do it.

Nothing much to see south of Corner Brook.

In short.

St John's. You can see everything in about 2 days
Do a drive around at least one of the bays for the outport scene, but it is more of a drive trip.
Drive across the Island to Gros Morne, stay a day there.
If interested, you could kill an hour or so at a museum or two along the way [There used to be an insectorium near Deer Lake]

Really about 5 or 6 days and you are really done. To be honest, it really isn't worth it unless you are visiting family and friends, or you have some personal connection to the place. Too far away from anywhere else. Or if you like killing animals, great place to get your moose.
The truly unique scenic opps are few and far between and once you have seen one or two outports, you have seen them all.
Hotels tend to be expensive for some reason, I can't advise on availability. Could call ahead.

Take a look at the Caribou.
20 years and I've never seen a Caribou.
Seen about 20 or so Moose, including 9 in one fucking day on the Northern Peninsula. Another 3 or so west of Bay Roberts one night. Even been ran off the road by one on a snowy night.

If you like really old stuff try the 500 million year old, give or take, fossil beds in Spanish Bay or Mistaken Point SE of St John's

There is the Quidi Vidi rowing regatta in St. John's on Aug 3. It is mainly fun & a big party, rather than an intense sporting event.

When are you going ? remember that summer occurs only between mid July and august. The best weather and IMHO best sencary is on the west coast. If your looking for out of the way places, check out the Port Au Port peninsula. Drive and then walk to long point-filled with large granite and marble boulders-quite beautiful. If you like fishing, the west coast has some on the best salmon fishing anywhere, but get a license. On the east coast ,check out Greenspond.- one of the oldest settlements in nfld
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greenspond
If you really want to get of the beaten path, arrange to have a local take you out to some of the islands in Bonavista bay. All the early fishing villages where on these islands before the resettlement. There are many old house that are being converted to cabins and many very old creepy graveyards where people where buried in only 2 ft of soil-very surreal.

Cape Spear was awesome and I found it very touching as I am a major fan of Terry Fox and his history.

I also really enjoyed going to Dildo (45 mins or so outside St. Johns) and buying gifts from the tacky gift shop for everyone. And this sign really made the trip though...

And, amazingly enough, the best Indian restaurant I've found in Canada is in Newfoundland - India Gate in St. John's. Have a wonderful trip!
