In 2001, 3000 dead Americans concerned society so much that two wars were launched, campaigns were run to ban Muslims, and the political right supported the Patriot Act that significantly expanded law enforcement abilities while putting significant limits on people's personal freedoms.
In 2020, 338,000 dead Americans and those same right wingers tell us we're overreacting and they consider having to wear a mask in a store to be an immense invasion of personal freedoms.
