hey guys

question for you all. im currently looking in the market to purchase a 64 chevy impala. i have narrowed my choice down to a couple cars.

one of them has a restorted interior (nothing flashy, but clean and nice), and needs a paint job, along with the usual fixer-uppers. the price is $6500, and can be run down to $6K.

the other vehicle is about $8900 and needs a completely new paint job, as well as interior work done to it. it's in a primer condition as we speak.

i have not yet gone out and gotten a mechanic to check thse cars yet, but any recommendation or any experience from purchasing thse old school cars?

im looking to invest some money in them and sell the cars down the road.

any help would be appreciated.

I'd say look for the specialty trim parts, see what is missing. The price of specialty parts has gone crazy.
For a lot of old cars you can get repro parts, but the quality is very hit and miss.
I'd say get a mechanic to help decide.
Don't worry about powertrain, unless it is numbers matching and is big block (409). The cost is going to be replacing the small parts. Take a magnet with you to check for body filler as well.
The choice with everything else being equal..... how much is fixing the interior going to cost. if less than 3 grand and the cars are comparable.....

Get a classic car appraiser to help you here if you don't know how to check yourself. The $6500 car may be all bondo under the paint job while the $8900 car may be solid. He can also advise you as to what "rare" options will give the best return. Check the "Old Car Trader" for their services.

thxs for the advice guys...really appreciate it.

distantvoy. u mentioned take a magnet to check for fillers..what do u mean by that?....

also, the two cars, the $6500 64 impala is owned by a private owner near ajax and is selling is due to health reasons...

the $8900 model is being sold by a garage.

nevertheless, if i go thru. with this....i might go for the $6500 model only b.c i think i can invest the $2K in car items such as rims etc. ....if u guys have any more tips or nething ..it would be appreciated.

If it's really for investment purposes, don't waste your time adding anything non-stock like aftermarket rims. The closer it is to a "100 point" car, the more money it's worth. Take the $2K and save it towards a decent quality paint job ($4K+)

On the other hand, if it's just for fun then do what you think is good and enjoy. I personally think that's this the whole point with owning a classic car - driving it and having fun, even if it does have primer showing.

Just owning is only half of it. Showing it and watching others enjoy and appreciate it is the best part.

Resto-mods are going for good coin as well now so either way would work as an investment. Classic cars should always be finished IMHO.
