Jailbreaking is the result of independent iPhone owners trying to determine what software they should be able to load on their own phone. Because it is their own phone, jailbreaking is legal but Apple in their relentless mandate to curb any freedom of thought from their users have campaigned hard to prevent the activity.
I used jailbreaking to obtain services that were offered only to the newer models. Thank goodness I made the leap to android and a system that embraced freedom of choice otherwise I would be an Apple zombie until a jailbreak solution was finally available.
