Hello Gentlemen,

It's Asian Nicole. MAOMETTO II by Gioachino Rossini is on stage at the Four Seasons Center from APRIL 29 to MAY 14, 2016. On May 11th, my darling opera professor and I went to see this spectacular show (and I believe it is the last opera of this season). I was so pleasantly surprised by how amazing all the singers performed.

Love and war collide in Rossini's epic drama. Maometto II is a serious work that revolves around love, politics, and family ties. In Rossini's grand bel canto opera Maometto II, he unleashes his full arsenal of vocal fireworks on the historical tale of the great Turkish Sultan, Maometto, and his quest to conquer the Holy Roman Empire.

Maometto II is an 1820 opera in two acts by Gioachino Rossini to an Italian libretto by Cesare della Valle. Set in the 1470s during a time of war between the Turks and Venetians, the work was commissioned by the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples. Della Valle based his libretto on his earlier play Anna Erizo. The name of the title character, Maometto II, refers to the real-life Ottoman Sultan and conqueror of Constantinople Mehmed II, who lived from 1432 to 1481.

Maometto II (Luca Pisaroni) plans to invade Negroponte, the gateway between the eastern and western Mediterranean regions; the head of the Venetians, Paolo Erisso must lead his forces against the incursion. Erisso’s daughter Anna (Leah Crocetto), while betrothed to Calbo (Elizabeth DeShong), is in love with a man she believed to be a Corinthian nobleman, but who turns out to be none other than Maometto II himself. Anna must choose between love and honour, and, in the end, makes a tragic, if inevitable decision.

Superstar Italian bass-baritone Luca Pisaroni makes his COC debut as “a chilling and complex Maometto. His dashing stage presence and virile voice exude menacing authority”---New York Times. Canadian Opera Company’s Maometto II boasts spectacular singing. Toronto audiences are lucky to have the chance to see bass baritone Luca Pisaroni perform live.

This confidence translates to the singing, which is nothing short of spectacular. Soprano Leah Crocetto gives a stellar performance as Anna, and mezzo soprano Elizabeth DeShong, as Calbo, is mesmerizing.

Conductor Harry Bicket makes a welcome return to the podium to lead this exquisite rarity in a production hailed as “thrilling experiential theater”---Opera News.

Once again...Thanks so much for the wonderful evening, my darling culture professor! This opera was outstandi
ng!! I enjoyed it a lot! :giggle:
