Hello Gentlemen,

It's Asian Nicole. John Cranko-choreographed melodrama, Onegin, based on Alexander Pushkin's narrative poem, is a compelling but dramatically flawed work. The story tells of mousy Tatiana, who falls in love with Onegin, a wealthy young poseur, and is cruelly spurned by him. Years later, after she has made an advantageous marriage, he returns and declares his love, but this time it is she who refuses him.

Last night was the opening night of Onegin. I was so glad that I had a chance to see this wonderful ballet show, performed by the National Ballet of Canada at the Four Seasons Center.

The ballet's finest moments are the beautifully made duets for the two leads at the end of Act 1 and Act 3. In the first, the Onegin of Tatiana's dreams steps from her bedroom mirror and sweeps her into his arms; in the second, her tortured denial of her own rekindled feelings leaves her limp, fluttering and broken.

Xiao Nan Yu projects Tatiana’s youthful susceptibility and later emotional resolve with searing penetration. Her performance was extraordinary. Maturity brings emotional insight and today every move Yu makes speaks eloquently about what’s going on inside. She acts through the body in a way words could never communicate as effectively.

The breathtaking sets and costumes are incredible. Despite the all-star ensemble, talent and testosterone can't make up for a lack of taste – not to mention more Tchaikovsky's beautiful music.

Wow, what a wonderful night! I really enjoyed this phenomenal ballet show.
