I've seen TV and radio ads from Telus promoting a "3G Curve." Does such a thing actually exist? I thought the only 3G BB devices were the Bold and the Storm. The new Curve 8900 (Javelin) was only EDGE I thought.

Does anyone know if a 3G Curve actually exists?

Really?! Thanks. I had no idea.

I'm surprised the 8900 doesn't offer it. I prefer the size of the Curve to the Bold, but really want the 3G speed...

Ever thought of getting a Nokia E71 instead of a blackberry? It has 3G, it's built-in web browser supports streaming from sites like You-Tube (the full version, and not just the mobile one), its thinner than any blackberry, and has a very nice build quality. Only areas the Blackberry has the Nokia beat in are it's screen and camera.

curve

I am using a Curve right now to read and respond to this post. Works well but not what I'd call amazing. I give it a 7/10
Bell's current offer for a Curve is $49. with a three year term. Worth looking into.
A friend just got the Storm and seems to be very happy with it.

I'm a Nokia fanboy and really like the E71, but for email (and remote admin) I'd still give the nod to the Blackberry. For everything else, the E71 rocks, and email is tolerable (for me anyway).

I haven't really looked at the non-BB smartphones. What else is out there for GSM?

Push Email is the primary application for me. I've had friends disappointed with the iPhone, slick as it is. I've also gotten used to the real keyboard form factor. I'm actually posting this from an older BB 8700 while I replace the trackball in my curve.

I just got a couple unexpected bucks, so I think I'll upgrade in the new year. I figure I'm willing to spend as much as I would on a good PSE session :)

Blackberry is the only one* with "real" push email; the others pretty much just use IMAP IDLE, which comes very close, but isn't quite "push" the way Blackberry does it. IMAP IDLE requires a constant open connection; Blackberry uses a patented solution which involves the server "waking up" the client when new mail's available. Blackberry also uses compression, which can be useful if you don't have a great data plan.

*There are some other third-party solutions that offer server push (though, again, not quite the way Blackberry does it), including Nokia's own email service. In most, if not all, cases though you'll have to pay separately for this. Nokia's service is free right now (and may continue to be for some users), as is the service and client from Seven. There've been mixed reviews about Nokia's email service, but so far it's been great for me.

If you haven't tried a Nokia E71, drop by a Roger's kiosk and check it out. Much better looking than pictures of it would suggest. Very nice phone - definitely worth a good PSE session.

Actually, Hangman, you are correct. All the Curves, including the 8900 are EDGE devices. The only 3G BB out there is the Bold.
