ACtually, when you think about it...is it really?

For eg: a regular speeding ticket to a millionaire is what, about as inconvenient as buying a stamp?

But $30K, that will make him think twice about speeding again....

I know I know, it brings up all kinds of legal arguments about how there should be ONE law for all, rich or poor.....but you KNOW that isn't the case (for eg: those two rich brats who killed the cab driver while racing) and anyone remember a case about OJ Simpson? He bought that one......

The concept used is one of "day fines" You get a certain number of day-fines, proportional to your income. A fine is supposed to hurt everyone equally.

Between a rock and a hard place
There are plenty of examples of where this wont work. For example the businessman who lives abundantly but only declares a small salary will dodge the system like he does his taxes. Or a high income earner with a large family to support will be impoverished for a mistake that would cost someone with greater means much less.

There sure are lots of examples of cases where the scaled fine is unfair, just as there are lots of examples of where the single price fine is unfair. The question is which one is more often fair? I'll bet dollars to donuts that the scaled fine gets it right far more often than the single price fine. No system is perfect, but this seems better.

Holy shit fuji, that's a pretty decent post!

Which kind of reminds me of the remake of the movie "shaft" with Samuel L Jackson: A billionaire was charged with murder and the prosecutors were asking for $25M bail. The judge said that was unreasonable and assigned $1M bail. The accused said "I keep that in petty cash" lol and took off to switzerland....
