3 fairly serious nuclear "waiting" to happen incidents are waiting to happen in the USA. By luck, one plant in Colardo relucetnly made saftey improvemens vs. Floods or wit would be another Japan already, but if the flooding persists the back up genertor will fry and the plant will be in the same boat.

On the good news, since there is more time than Japan, if they rush they can shut down the thing NOW. But natural disaster happen everywhere and to think we are immune is nuts . . .
Not too far away the reverse problem. Forest fire may hit a nuclear waste dump site who are held in flamable OUT DOOR tents. The fire crews in the area have no training or anti-radiation suits. If this occurs they will either have to evacuate or risk deaht by radiation.

The NRC says that this isn't the case. In fact one of the plants you mention has been in cold shut down since April and is partialy defueled.

As to the Los Alamos National Laboratory, the real problem isn't radioactive materials, it is rather the vast replacement costs not only of the buildings but of such items as supercomputers.

I seriously doubt the Los Alamos laboratory is in any real danger. It is seperate from the town itself. If nothing else, firefighters will protect the facility even if it means the town burns down.

According to the BBC interviewed expert the danger is low ; but the information that the USA is pure bull shit. He said that while the US is as good as the Japanese in safety (which is to say the best) we have moved into a small but real danger of substantive faliure. The thousnads of barrels of radiactive waste for example, can not longer be moved under present condtions, and unless the USA brings in extra reserves

Official reportA small fire has been contained at Los Alamos National Laboratory, which is closed. The 1-acre fire was reported in Water Canyon within Lab’s Technical Area 49. The Lab will remain closed on Tuesday as well.

“I have talked to the director of the laboratory. He’s assured me that all of the materials of a hazardous nature or a radioactive nature are all well controlled and are not in danger and not threatened,” Sen. Jeff Bingaman said.

But our biggest concern is whether the fire could reach the fabric buildings (essentially very large tents) at Technical Area-54’s Area G that store some 20,000 barrels of plutonium-contaminated wastes from nuclear weapons research and production. We recommend that the public use satellite-based fire detection data and fire intelligence information published by the US Forest Service to monitor the situation (see related post for instructions on how use it). From that we can “see” that the leading edge of the fire is a little more than three miles from Area G.

That being said, while it might not be "real" danger its the kind of danger that happens when one is asleep at the switch and all yell breaks out. What counts are "real" danger? 1%, 2%, 45%? One in a thousand?

Regardless, considering the devestating effects (Japan still has massive power cuts and shot downs in their capital and an 8% hit to their econmy) Nukes for power are like gambling your life against somone getting 4 Aces. Sure, it not likely to happen but is with a few bucks?
