See 23andMe. I think this is cool.

For $200 you submit a DNA sample (cheek cells), send the sample off and in a couple of weeks they'll tell you:
  • 186 health and genetic traits
  • Your ancestral heritage going back thousands of years
  • Can take place in genetic research if you're interested.
I think that is SO cool! Going to drop the $200 next week and see what comes up.

One word of caution. Unless this is something new it is not at all like a paternity/maternity test, rather they will say that you share a certain genotype with x percent of this group, and y percent of another group and z percent of yet a third group etc. . . .

From their trademark, I presume "23 and me" is a play on the X chromosome

Jesus. You think credit card phishing and other scams are dangerous? SIN numbers are nothing compared to DNA...and here they get you to pay them to keep your DNA assay! Incredible.

I suspect in the future we'll be able to get an instant DNA reading off anyone we meet for free, maybe this is how we'll date or how escorts will screen clients.
