23,000 years ago, our early ancestors began planting and growing their own food. Why are we not doing it now?

I decided next year im making a big vegetable garden and gonna get me some fruit trees. People back in my great grandmothers time were smarter than people now they always had enough food straight from the garden. fresh herbs with a strawberry patch and raspberry bushes and wild blue berries. sounds great don't you think? plus great exercise bending down and up taking care of it....why aren't more people doing this that own houses?

Because it’s a lot of work.

Still good on you! And if I may offer up some advice. Make nice with all the old Italians living in your neighbourhood now. You will thank me.

I think it's called economics. Time invested versus reward gained...versus a farmer's market.
This! even thousands of years ago people did not grow all of their own food or even provide all the same services. People would trade for services.

But….if you want to grow your own food go for it.
it’s a great skill to have.
My mom has a large backyard and garden and I learned a lot from her.

Because 23,000 years ago we didn't have medieval peasants
to do the work. I actually prefer it that way. Never eat at a buffet
because I hate to be served by myself. I do not mind
eating food produced straight from my garden and slaughter
house but only if the dirty work is done by servants. I was
born to be served. Eating food produced from mechanized
farming sold in the supermarket is beneath me.

I tried growing an organic vegetable garden. Several times.

The bugs just ate it all. Despite all labour on my part to deter them.

In the end, I just surrendered to our slug Overlords. (And wondered if the organic tomatoes in Loblaws are genuinely organic or if I'm being lied to again.)

I have had small gardens in the past. Some food is easier to grow than others such as peas, green beans, tomatoes, peppers and various herbs. I also grow weed as I just potted them this weekend.

It is more of a hobby to grow as it allows me to spend time outside.

Despite what the "grow your own" advocates say, the subsistence farming only led to marginal survival and malnutrition because of limited area and crop failures due to lack of fertilizers and pesticides, etc. Successful Organic gardens are hard to pull off consistently and produce smaller vegetables and fruits.

its a great hobby IMO I used to help my great grandmother as a child with her garden and there's nothing better than grabbing a fresh vegetable from garden right to your plate

I tried. But the neighbours always complained when the herd broke down the picket fence separating our properties. And then when my giant prize Peruvian Boar mauled the accountant guy next door, I just couldn't handle the paperwork the City sent me and I said "To hell with them all! Pigs, merino sheep, Texas longhorns, even the Bengal tiger I was keeping as a pet!" Just wasn't worth the hassle and bad vibes.

Love my own veg garden, but rodents (squirrels, groundhogs and yes rabbits) are the bane of my existence. They eat and destroy a lot. A raised bed is deterrence against at least the rabbits.
