So happy to see 'Room' getting its due. I hope Brie Larson wins Best Actress for 'Room'. Too bad Jacob Tremblay who played her son was snubbed, as was Ridley Scott. 'Carol' was a surprise non Best Film nominee.

Rachel McAdams = !!!!

'The Revenant' gets 12 (!) nominations. Yeah! Emmanuel Lubezki could win a 3rd Oscar in a row for DOP ('Gravity', 'Birdman') and that would be something.

'Son of Saul' should win the Foreign Film Award.

February 28 Oscar Party beckons. Enjoy!

I've seen half of the Best Picture nominees (Mad Max, Spotlight, Bridge of Spies and The Martian) and plan to see the other 4, but in my opinion Sicario was better than the 4 I've seen and I'm bummed that it and it's Canadian director were not nominated, and I'm especially pissed that Benicio Del Toro wasn't nominated for Best Supporting Actor. That was the best performance I saw all year.

Sicario Director Denis Villeneuve is very talented (Incendies, Prisoners) his time will come.

Leo should have won an Oscar for The Aviator, but I can understand why The Academy would chose to fete Ray Charles over Howard Hughes. If he wins one this year then Jennifer Jason Leigh should win Best Supporting Actress. Hugh Glass and Daisy Domergue are essentially the same character. But I must warn anyone thinking of taking a date to The Hateful 8, if you do so you'll be washing your ass alone.

I agree - Sicario was the best movie I saw last year by far.

Ex-Machina is among the best films of the year, for me. Oscar Isaac would be a favorite to win Best Actor in my books. Having said that here are my predictions.

Best Director: George Miller - Mad Max:Fury Road
Best Supporting Actor - Mark Raylance - Bridge of Spies (Rocco Balboa is a character the old soup bone can play in his sleep)
Best Supporting Actress - Jennifer Jason Leigh - The Hateful 8
Best Actor - Leonardo Di Caprio - The Revenant
Best Actress - Brie Larson - Room
Best Picture - The Revenant

Jennifer Lawrence is overhyped for a poor film, Emily Blunt deserved it more. It's time for another young actress to be feted and she deserves it.

The academy is out of touch, when they don't nominate the most popular film of the decade for even one award.

Senor Draper. Got back from Havana early this week.

I have only seen Creed (by mistake, but it it was good), and saw Sicario and Bridge of Spies earlier.

I must see Spotlight first (saw the actual documentary at TIFF a few years ago).

Then the Revenant but seems like I should see Room.

Thank you for your post, and insight.

P.S. Who is Emmanuel Lubezki?

I agree that Sicario was incredible but I must catch up quickly to see all the other nominees.

I really like Mark Ruffalo.

I haven't seen either Joy or The Danish Girl but my sources tell me they are weak films. TDS supposedly is a film that only insomniacs could love.

Apart from Emily Blunt, the most obvious snubs are Idris Elba for Beast of No Nation and Ryan Coogler for Creed. BONN never got beyond Netflix but Elba as The Commandant was spectacular. I don't understand why "Old Soup Bone" is getting all the acclaim? Ryan Coogler's and authoritative directing for Creed my MB Jordan and Stallone look very good.

Through most of The Revenant I wasn't convinced that Leo deserved an Oscar, the last 10 minutes of the film got him over. Or should I say Tom Hardy got him over, he doesn't fuck around when filming a fight scene. I didn't expect Tom to get a nomination, when Jane Fonda publicly endorses then your nom becomes a lock.

the nominations this year sets the standards for future films and every body nominated is white and films like Revenant have raised the bar on gore

I am going to go see Revenant to watch DiCaprio EAT SOME RAW BUFFALO LIVER

WHEN YOU ARE STARVING YOU EAT ANYTHING AND THEY USED REAL RAW LIVER

Yup. Wasn't mentioned even once. I guess it is not frufru enough for the academy elites.
Not so fast fujimoto, Mad Max: Fury Road got 10 nominations. That film certainly isn't shishi enough for the Academy snobs.
