Yes, yet another car thread. I've been looking for a luxurious car lately, and this caught my eye. Looks great, but I haven't test driven it yet. Is it a reliable car? There are a couple of these babes being sold for about $22,000 with under 90K on them. Is it a smart buy? I'm thinking of putting down atleast $10,000 for the downpayment, and pay the rest over 48 months which would roughly come up to $260/mth. I've also been looking at the X Type, but I hear it has alot of problems.

You are right to stay away from the X type for sure, I dont really have any first hand experience with the S type. But since you wanted the X type for its 4 wheel drive I assume, I belive a 2002 Audi A6 can be had for the same price bracket you are looking in with ~90k. And my opinion, Jag's are for the 70+ years.

I disagree, I had my first Jag at 24, the last model year for the round head lights. I will say however it was a lemon and in the shop 6 months out of the first nine I owned it. To make matters worse the gold Cat was stolen at the dealership and they wanted me to pay for it! I sold before the year was up and never bought another one :(

Typical Jaguar story.

Unless this 'S' has the 4.2, you are basically buying a Ford Contour at a premium. If you want a great used car that is worth the buck, look at Lexus or BMW

A mechanic friend once told me.......

The only thing that makes you appear affluent by driving a jag is that you can afford all of the repair bills on it.(btw he is british and had owned 1)

I think you mean Lincoln LS.

I love the look of Jags and would own one if they weren't such a crap shoot.

I LOVE the old E types.

As far as I am concerned, if someone offered me a concourse E type, or a new BMW 740 with the clause that I had to keep either, I would pick the jag in a heart beat without a second thought.

If I didn't have to keep it, then I would take the BMW, sell it, and buy the E type.

I love Jag's. The old E type hardtop is such a nice ride. I too have wondered why the S type is so cheap. For looks you cannot beat them. Just wondering what is the problem with the XK series?
I see so many nice ones for sale on Ebay.com.

Part of the reason I don't particuarly like the new XK's is that I see them as "an old man's car"

They don't do it for me like the old E types did. They (the XK's) are so refined, so heavy looking, so blah / generic, I would never buy one. I don't even think they are available with a manual transmission for crying out loud.

Park an E type at the mall and you will have a crowd.

Park an XK-8 and you won't even get a second look.

The look like a cross between a Camaro and Ford Probe.

I am still waiting for the F type.

And please Jaguar Gods, take your ques from the E type and not the XJS

Saw a guy on the DVP driving a S-Type 3.0 with the license plate that read "CNTA4DME". I was thinking, "pahleez ... on 3.0?" If he were driving a Type-R, I would agree. But on a 3.0? I just had to laugh at his sorry ass! :D

Another time, I was on Bay St and saw this a guy dirivng a CLK 320 Convertible and his plate read "SLF MDE" - I would assume self made. hehe

Its just funny to see these people driving entry level luxury cars and thinking they are Donald Trump or Mr. Dell.

any day German Cars are more reliable and durable than the Jags
If you want to drive a premium car for that kind of money, any day buy a Geman Car which will last you for much longer time, and its worth spending your money on them, plus its a prestige in having a premium german Car, as the german makes their each car with love and tender care, and they do not produce car in Mass production like the Japanese or Americans do. Go for a Mercedes, its a heaven on earth.

While this may have been true in the past, it certainly isn't anymore.

The Germans are building crap now, and Benz has probably one of the worst records for reliability. I think JD Power ranks VW dead last and Benz second to dead last.

And all that for the highest prices out there.
