Hello Gentlemen,

It's Asian Nicole. After the Four Seasons Centre was fully reopened to audiences this year, my darling opera professor and I decided to get back on track, and we together went to see a famous opera - "The Flying Dutchman" by Richard Wagner on October 13th, Thursday evening . This opera starts from October 7th to October 23rd, 2022 on stage at the Four Seasons Centre, downtown, Toronto.

Stepping ashore for its first trip to the COC since 2010, Richard Wagner’s monumental opera The Flying Dutchman returns this season to intrigue audiences with its striking visuals, stormy music, and haunting ghost story.

The Flying Dutchman is a German-language opera, with libretto and music by Richard Wagner. The central theme is redemption through love. Wagner conducted the premiere at the Königliches Hoftheater Dresden in 1843. Wagner claimed in his 1870 autobiography Mein Leben that he had been inspired to write the opera following a stormy sea crossing he made from Riga to London in 1839.

The Flying Dutchman was an infamous supernatural ghost ship. Originally, the Dutchman held the sacred task of collecting all the poor souls who died at sea and ferrying them to the afterlife. During the Golden Age of Piracy, the Dutchman would become a ship feared by many across the seven seas.

The legend of The Flying Dutchman is said to have started in 1641 when a Dutch ship sank off the coast of the Cape of Good Hope. Captain van der Decken was pleased. The trip to the Far East had been highly successful and at last, they were on their way home to Holland.

Leading the orchestra through Wagner's melodic score is conductor Johannes Debus. The performance opens with an emotive suite of music to be performed throughout the show, and really sets the tone. Debus and the orchestra are similar to the cast, in that they triumph in balancing the harsh with soft and the loud with quiet in the just over two hours' long production.

The synopsis of the opera: The Dutchman is a doomed sailor cursed to sail the seas without respite, only able to set foot on shore for one day every seven years. If he can find a woman on that day who is willing to sacrifice her life for him until death, can release him from his curse. When the Dutchman meets Senta, she makes that vow, and when her former suitor threatens the pact, she proves her love, sacrificing herself for the Dutchman.

The production’s success can be attributed to Alden (original director)’s sincere reverence for Wagner’s work, a sweeping tale about a Dutchman (Johan Reuter) condemned to sail the seven seas for eternity unless he finds true love when he lands ashore once every seven years.

BRAVO!!! COC’s "The Flying Dutchman" is such a fine production with top-notch vocals. Thanks so much for the wonderful evening, my darling opera professor! This opera was fantastic, and I really enjoyed it! :giggle:
