Hello Gentlemen,

It's Asian Nicole. Carmen--Georges Bizet's famous opera runs through from October 14 to November 4, 2022 at Four Seasons Centre for the performing arts. My darling Opera Professor and I went to see the fabulous Carmen opera on October 26th. This is my second time with my darling opera professor to see it. I would say that the Canadian Opera Company’s Carmen is a party invitation that you should accept! :giggle:

The COC hopes to bring some heat to the fall season with audience favourite, Carmen. Two mezzo-sopranos share the title role in this Bizet work: American, two-time Grammy Award-winner, J’Nai Bridges and Tunisian-Canadian COC Ensemble Studio alumna Rihab Chaieb. Directed by Edmonton Opera Artistic Director Joel Ivany, this COC production aims to transport audiences to a sun-drenched setting of bustling street scenes and outlaw hideaways.

Carmen (Rihab Chaieb) is a seductive, freedom-loving woman, desired by many. She takes Don José , a young soldier as her latest lover, who defects from the army to join her smuggling life. But when she spurns him for the exciting toreador Escamillo, Don José can not accept her rejection. Their final encounter, outside the bull ring, ends tragically when Don José stabs her to death.

Chaieb is stunning in the leading role, with a razor sharp presence that really suits the larger-than-life persona that Carmen has taken on in both the story, and in popular culture. She sings through the repertoire beautifully, but puts equally as much into her acting and delivery as she does her vocal performance to really sell the elusive, strong aspects of the character. I love her voice!!!

Baritone Lucas Meacham, last heard in Toronto as Marcello in La Bohème, was a very impressive Escamillo, flooding the Four Seasons Centre with his huge, warm baritone and toreador swagger. Every single supporting role was very well taken by present and former COC Ensemble Studio artists, a testament of the strength and depth of Canadian talent.

The COC Ensemble rises to the occasion yet again in terms of both vocal performance and acting. Under conductor Jacques Lacombe, making his COC mainstage debut, the orchestra delivers Bizet's score beautifully.

BRAVO!!! This Carmen is the whole package—well sung and cleverly staged. Good to the last drop, and keeps us yearning for more...
Thanks so much for taking me to see this fabulous opera for the second time, my darling opera professor! I really enjoyed it! 🌹
