Latest Tom Cruise film

They spent 100 million just marketing it

With Tm Cruise looking unrecognisable beneath layers of make-up as the insane oil tycoon, through to the directorial credentials of Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (who already has an Oscar on his shelf for Birdman), this one looked like a surefire contender for box office and awards glory.

In fact, following its less than auspicious debut last weekend bagging just $8m (£6m) in the US — four times less than Anne Hathaway’s psycho-thriller Verity, which also debuted — The Wrap reports that the movie could lose as much as $250m (£189m) by the time it’s finished its run.

As for Cruise himself, the actor said: ‘When I am making [movies], I’m not going, “Opening weekend!” I feel very much like we’re going to make something that is a lasting piece of cinema.

‘They transcend… you just hope you can make a film that can last.’

I was looking forward to it but a seems to be a movie that seems pretentious like it is making a grand social statement with humor but the whole thing falls flat

It's a shame really because when you look back there have been a lot of good movies that have been absolute stinkers at the box office. I haven't seen it yet but I doubt it's as bad as the box office would make it seem

It's a great movie, so I'm finding it kind of suspicious what's going on with the negative reviews and even more so the online negativity towards it. But definitely worth seeing, it truly is a good movie, best I've seen in a few years.

Yea it seems very weird in that respect...

I think people in general don't know anymore what is a good story. Thank you social media for the 2- 30min videos with not Acts, content, context in stories telling. People have become zombies.

Scientology having their own building downtown was like a canker sore on our city. Tommasino Cruise is no longer considered homo sapien, he's now homo novus.

Family destroying, human trafficking cult.

Glad someone actually enjoyed it. The online pile-on feels a bit much right now, especially when people haven’t even seen it yet.

I saw it and I felt like walking but there was just enough to keep me in my seat.

I am glad I did as the ending is a great ending and saves the film but does make a film that is too complex to follow and just enough good parody and fine acting to keep you in your seat a great film.

It should have cut the parody and made a serious film that matched the quality of the ending

that's one of the main things i've heard most about the movie, the last part of the movie is really really good while the rest is kind of lack lustre

It is as though the stupid parody was an intentional set up for the great ending

BTW, the plot is absurdist. It is totally unscientific. An iceberg, no matter how huge will not run into a coast and cause tidal waves destroying Europe. But, maybe the absurdist quality of it was the point, as was the self absorbed weak parody, I am unsure but if it was it is too subtle

I'll probably wait until it's streaming to watch it. I don't get out to the theatre as much as I used to. I don't really know anything about it outside of the trailers and they looked okay
