I tried search but the first two pages of hits didn't match what I wanted.

I am looking for a second phone and number to use for the hobby. My main objective is to keep my real name from being out in the ladies contact lists. Also, to keep a separate phone that I can hide from the SO.

I was using Speakout from 7-Eleven but with the end of 3G and my failure to keep my minutes topped up, it no longer works or accepts top up. I had a piece of crap old text only phone anyway so good riddance. However, I still have over $100 against that account so getting back in with them with a phone that gets along with their service would be nice. The number of 7-Eleven stores has dropped massively since I started the hobby, so buying minutes there has turned out to be a pain.

I looked at my local mall (Upper Canada) and there seems to be lots of providers. Rather than sort through them all, I thought I would ask the brethren here for their recommendations.

Cost is not my primary issue. I was spending $25 every 3-5 months or so with Speakout top ups but that was text only so when an SP replied with an emoji or similar, the phone went crazy. Going forward, I will be using a more modern phone, preferably an iphone but I can switch if that is a deal breaker. The plans all seem to be in the $30/month range for the activity I will be using it for (hobbying). I don't need high speed or massive data. I just text SP's with the occasional voice call with them.

Dollarama is selling Lucky Mobile sims, I was also curious about that approach.

Thoughts?

I was at the Rogers booth at Costco and saw a guy buy a prepaid for a year plan for with unlimited talk/text in Canada and 30 or 40 gigs of data (~4 gb per month) for $150.

If you don’t want your actual name to be displayed you can ask your cell provider not to display it, only your number.

I think that would mean all my calls would not show my name. And they would still have my number.

I am going to get one of the Freedom packages and put a dummy name against that when I get it.

Chatr has a talk and text only plan for a flat rate of $100 a year paid up front.
The one with a bit of data is up to $150 now. great service, but I tried to renew and got the Spanish inquisition from a pushy sales guy trying to charge $30/month because it auto renews. I said... dude, that's twice as much as it is now... this is an emergency phone for an elderly friend, just take the $180 cash and they have a phone for another year. he wouldn't hear of it... I had to re explain... not my phone.. I have cash only... Im not allowed to, nor do I have access to this elderly persons phone... he was a total dick. Anyway, phones recharged for another year.
