George has been suffering from dementia for several years. He initially was kept at the West Park Health Center. He was moved to Chartwell Long Term Care. One of the toughest boxers ever. RIP.
I remember seeing the Ali/Chuvalo fight years after it happened. Chuvalo looked like he got the crap beat out of him while only Ali ended up in the hospital from the punishment Chuvalo inflicted. Don't recall ever seeing another fight like that one. RIP George Chuvalo.
Great boxer. His family life was a tragedy, two sons died of heroin overdose another son also addicted killed himself and the Wife killed herself after the sons died.
Back in the late 80's , co workers and I ran into him on Spadina Ave. chatted with him for a bit. GV had a big thick skull melon head, tree trunk for a neck , thick boned body, bear paw for hands and barrel chested, no wonder he was never knocked down!
I'm sorry to hear that he was a regular customer of mine when I was in retail business many years ago in High Park. Nice man very humble a true gentleman.
