How much cash do you carry on you for non-hobbying incidentals?

I usually have $100 in my wallet, 4x$5, 4x$20. I pay for my lottery tickets, Tim’s, Starbucks and single grocery items with cash. Pretty well every else goes on my card.

If I’m at home about $100, enough for a tank of gas if all the electronic means of payment are down. If I’m out of town for a few days about $300-$400. Saved my ass a few times.

Post-pandemic, I haven't carried much physical cash on me, aside from the envelope for my sessions. I think I had the same $10 bill in my wallet for months during the first lockdown.

It's mostly just been small change. One of the Beer Stores I return my empties to occasionally only offers cash but they started giving the option of using it to offset the cost of your next purchase.

Admittedly, I have started to think of keeping at least a $20 in my wallet. I feel silly using my debit card to pay for purchases that are under $5.

Usually 30-40 bucks for a few stores that don't take cards and sometimes if you go to a flea market. But otherwise its only cards.

I keep a ziplock of loonies and toonies in the car for the car wash. and always about $100-200 in a range of 5/20/50 in my wallet in case I need cash for something, however I don't really carry my wallet with me anymore.
It's mainly tap and go and even my car has a digital key on my phone, so I don't even have to carry keys anymore either.
If I'm going somewhere that I may need cash I always bring it along. I've been to a few restaurants that are still cash only, but I tend to know that before going.

What's so funny,? am I here to amuse you??? that's the change I receive when I pay in bills! 😛
Nice Joe Pesci "Goodfellas" line... 👍

It's not that it's funny. And I only added a "Wow" emoji to your post.

It's just that $30 in coins in your back pocket must be pretty big and heavy.

Do you need a "belt and suspenders" to keep your pants up?

LOL my response was for the JohnHenry and Joey Badass who did the laugh emoji not to your "WOW"
The loonies and toonies don't weigh that much compared to the nickel, dimes and quarters, although I do cinch up my belt as tight as it will go!, no suspenders though!

It seems like what a $20 bill used to cover....now requires a $50.
Also seems like most things are $100 or more.
I used to carry $500 cash but now usually $1000.
Mostly use my card to rack up points for flights but having the cash in pocket for just in case always feels proper.

Just as a "by the way", I recently bought one of those "ratchet belts" you see on Amazon and TikTok.

Instead of single belt holes every inch or so, they infinitely adjust in 1/4" increments. Quite inexpensive too, yet good quality.

So, no kinks in the belt in the one or two holes I used to generally use, depending on my current weight (I have a bit of an old guy tummy), and whether I was wearing a shirt tucked in or out...

I love it!

I have one of those too and I like it! It's funny when a lady tries to unbuckle it though....tuff to find the release latch if u don't know where it is

La la land
I make lump sum donation to the church. So I just give a 1 - 100 note twice a year since the CRA allows. This way I am not always searching for money at donation moment.

Funny you bring this topic up. Just last week, I opened up my piggy bank (which held only limited edition circulation coins) and sorted out all the duplicates that were in there. There was over $30 worth of duplicate coins and I spent it during the course of the week on Tim’s runs and snacks at Nofrills. But aside from that isolated incident, I too am mainly card because I don’t like hoarding change

Having cash in my pocket has saved me a few times when away from home during internet outages, or power outages. Can't pay by credit or debit for gas when interac isn't working.. minimum 100-max 400 ish, unless heading to see an mpa or sp.
enough for rates, plus tip, or enticement.

Almost never, I don't even use plastic really, I've been using my phone to pay everything for quite a while
I started doing cell phone wallet this year after hearing it from my kids.

So convenient and secured behind your screen pin or finger print. E-mails me the transaction right away. Still paranoid though as I only attach a credit card with a smaller limit.

I keep a penny in my change pouch in my wallet for luck. You might see a toonie in there too. A few folded small bills under 100 total. One of my favourite restraunts accepts cash only.

Do "limited edition circulation coins" appreciate significantly in value over time?

Or is it just basically fun to collect them, hence why you spend the duplicates?
