Another win for Righties, and another loss for Lefties :D

Ford government can rip out Toronto bike lanes, Court of Appeal for Ontario rules

The Court of Appeal for Ontario has ruled that the removal of bike lanes along three Toronto arteries is not a violation of Charter rights and can proceed, reversing a lower court ruling.

The Ford government previously passed legislation in 2024 enabling it to remove bike lanes along Bloor Street, Yonge Street and University Avenue.

But in a 2025 ruling, Ontario Superior Court Justice Paul Schabas found the province’s plan violated the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms because it would “put people at increased risk of harm and death which engages the right to life and security of the person.”

In a ruling released on Friday, a three-judge panel with the Court of Appeal for Ontario unanimously found that “the Ontario legislature is as free to establish bicycle lanes as it is to remove them or authorize their removal.”

Its a matter of space and what makes sense. University makes sense as its wide enough and a major artery to get downtown. Yonge st is too narrow and shouldn't be used. Adelaide and Richmond are good choices. I think Wellesley would be another good choice.

As for suburbia I use several leading out to the west end. They are busy starting at 7 am when I use it. With commuters, fitness, and even some joggers.

I agree on the scooters. They need to blitz them and confiscate them.

Usage will only be increasing and everyone needs to realize this. Even summer use to lessen traffic and transit usage makes them worth it. I e bike about 6 months or so weather depending. I won't ride on ice or when salt is on the roads.

They were made for uber eats and that's it. All I see is motorized scooters and bikes using them and bullying regular cyclists off of them.
Believe it or not but "regular" cyclists regularly pass me when Im going 32 km with my speed inhibitor on. And the lycra wearing crowd are the biggest bullies on the paths. And biggest risk takers as well.

I agree the scooters are also bad. Cripes I see fill on e motorcycles on the paths occasionally. There is a lot more usage than you think. Remember many are at work having commuted when you might be out there.

All I see is traffic chaos during the down time when everyone is a work. It only takes five cars to create a traffic jam on the west side of Bloor st.

I think construction lane closures for months is a far worse thing. Especially when they no longer have to but just keep it for parking. The city needs to limit these.

Once again DoFo is pandering to his fan base without offering any solutions. Bike lanes should not be on main throughfares, rather re-locate them to less busy side streets.

Runners also use them. Sometimes side by side. I've also seen pedestrians use them without a care in the world.
Some even stop to look at their phones.

Some of them are considered shared lanes. Most of the joggers are fine, stick to the right. Meandering Pedestrians, especially large families are one of the banes of my existence, along with rollerblading chick's with earphones in.

Its a big city, and half the population are of below average intelligence. You just have to compensate for them.

How do you figure that? Many Righties believe Ford is a Lefty in disguise.
That's just you.
Most people can see that he is Maple MAGA.

Doug Ford hates Toronto, he couldn't win as mayor and now wants to kill it.
Spending provincial tax money to destroy something that municipal tax money built is a particularly shitty use of power.

There are no alternate side street routes in Toronto.
You should take a map of Toronto and plot an alternate east/west route to replace Bloor and find out.
