How fucked up is that? Tie the kid up LOL

A flight bound for Toronto was cancelled Thursday evening after a young child refused to secure their seatbelt, Porter Airlines has said.

Flight PD444 from Victoria International Airport in B.C. to Toronto's Pearson International Airport did not take off as a safety precaution, a spokesperson for Porter Airlines told CBC Toronto in a statement Saturday.

The aircraft left the terminal and headed to the runway for departure but a young child standing in their seat did not secure their seatbelt, despite attempts by the accompanying parent and cabin crew, Brad Cicero said.

The unsafe situation meant the aircraft could not take off, so flight attendants opted to return to the terminal and disembark passengers, he added.

The time required to bridge the aircraft, deplane the child and parent, retrieve their baggage and refile paperwork meant the plane would have departed too late, according to Cicero, who said Victoria's airport runway closes at 12:30 a.m.

"We apologize for the effect this had on other passengers, who were able to depart on a flight the following day," Cicero said.

The aircraft departed the following afternoon, Cicero said.

'A lot of frustration': passenger
Passenger Aryeh Kozuch says there was definitely "a lot of frustration," but the child wasn't being bratty or uncontrollable — rather, they were very scared.

"They just kept hiding under their seat. If they got forced into [being] strapped in, they just kind of slid out underneath."

But other passengers say the airline could have done more in a timelier fashion.

"It took forever," said Hillary Hertzberg. "The kid eventually got off the plane at 11:30 [p.m.], so we had been on the flight for about almost an hour at that point."

She says Porter also wasn't great at communication — especially after the flight was cancelled and passengers had to try and find a place to stay for the night.

"Luckily I had a place to stay," she said.

Others had to scramble for a room at a hotel, according to Hertzberg.

Now, she says she wants Porter to compensate passengers' expenses.

When asked, Porter Airlines would not say if it will do so.

Unless the kid’s name is Kal-El, strap the lad in and/or sit on them.
But I’m getting the feeling that despite not being Superboy, the kid was special. Wassup with the parents? Tough to say, wasn’t there…but surely this wasn’t ENTIRELY surprising.
Also fuck Porter for the luggage and post deplaning paperwork for the kid/parent which held up the flight. Get ‘em off, and deal with that shit later.
What a fuck up

IMO, the fault lies primarily with the parent(s). If they knew the kid was uncontrollable/agitated about the flight they should never have boarded. Better yet they could have used a mild sedative such as Gravol or Benadryl. And if the kid was acting up before departing the gate, Porter should have had the kid and parent exit the plane at that time, therefore what Porter did is their fault for the way the handled the situation.

Looking at it who the fuck flies 2 year old at 12:30 at night on an overnight 5+ hour flight?

This parent needs about 5 years on the no fly list for this idiocy. I don't blame Porter at all. They have very specific rules they have to follow and strictly enforced by federal law.

What a fucking joke! Nothing a good slap won't fix. Fucking stupid soft parent, I'll bet there was no father present. This is what happens when you never discipline your kids and let them get away with this shit. My kids (when they were young) wouldn't even try this cause they know what would happen.
Imagine when this brat becomes a teen, they're fucked and it's all their own doing.

Definitely one of the most ridiculous situations and results that I have heard of recently. To let a young child hold a flight hostage by his behaviour is a joke. The kid [ and parents if applicable ] should have been immediately removed from the plane and transported via an emergency vehicle without delay so that the plane could depart.

Sounds like some people have never travelled with (or even have) kids. This wasn't a case of bad parents letting their kid run free. They kept squirming out of the seat belt, they were obviously scared of what was going on. What exactly was Porter supposed to do? Kids squirms free on the runway, plane takes off, kid falls and hurts themselves or someone else. Kid hurt and airline gets sued. So they go back to the gate and the family gets off, security policy is they have to retrieve the luggage. That takes time. Now the pilots have to refile a flight plan, that takes time. Cross country flight uses a lot of fuel, not a large plane, perhaps the fuel used to taxi out and back used up their safety margin and they might need topped off. I don't think that happened because I don't think they fuel with passengers onboard anymore.

Why is no one talking about the airport here? "We close at 1230, fuck you and your 132 people on board". Does the airport manager get a kickback from the Holiday Inn or something?

Bizarre take. Kick them off the plane, get the luggage and get moving.

This is the part I don't understand. They turn back. Kick family off. Re-set. Now it's too late to leave. Everyone is fucked. InToronto several years ago (pre Covid?) my flight to Europe got delayed a LOT (airplane issue) and we took off at 3:00 am... WELL PAST the rules saying it was ok for Toronto airspace, but they did! So there must be concessions for shit like this.

Why didn’t the family just get kicked out the plane?
This is crazy to happen if I was a passenger on this flight I would be beyond pissed 😡 . If you can’t control your kid you shouldn’t be travelling with them
