Yet on Feb. 1, 2020, his diary records a meeting with a dozen prominent virologists in which only two credited this “natural origins” theory. The rest suspected the virus might have been created artificially, not least because a leading scientist in Wuhan, Shi Zhengli, was known to engage in the sort of gain-of-function research that could produce such a result.
The diary suggests that by Jan. 26, 2020, Dr. Fauci believed the virus hadn’t originated in the Wuhan wet market, often identified as the source by natural-origin advocates. This didn’t stop him and allies from painting skeptics of the natural-origin theory as politicized cranks and conspiracy theorists. Previously released documents shed light on how Dr. Fauci orchestrated publication of a scientific paper to suppress the theory that Covid leaked from the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
Per The Hill:
“We know the market was not the source, it was the amplifier,” Fauci wrote on Jan. 26, 2020. “Having said that, somewhere the virus jumped from animals to humans.”
Fauci also noted that during a Feb. 1, 2020, call with U.S. and international health experts, officials were in disagreement about COVID’s origins.
You mean he would have considered various options and evolved his opinion as more information came in?

The problem is Fauci contradicts himself quite a bit in private throughout 2020. Look I don't care to argue about masks, vaccines or even Fauci's penchant for publicity. I do however think it's important we know how and where the virus originated. I think you have been very defensive since you posted so much information that was written to lead us away from the Wuhan lab leak theory.
In reality, Fauci likely doesn't know for sure the virus' origin but perhaps he knows more about what was going on at the Wuhan lab.
You mean as a public communicator he went with the data and not his hunches until he had more information?

Or Fauci didn't want heat directed at the Wuhan lab.
Now we know that no one knows the origin of the virus with certainty.
I heard the best possible explanation of that today on a news podcast. It could have been an industry bias to divert attention away from Wuhan lab. The researchers protect their industry (and their funding) from excessive government oversight. It doesn't have to be a conspiracy or "sinister" as your sarcasm mocks..
PS- You're making a big presumption that there at some point there was reliable and solid scientific data supporting the wet market theory.
