Amazon delivery instructions not followed - packages stolen

What a headache.

FWB requested that I place an Amazon order to be delivered to her apartment .
Shoulda said no - or at least had the delivery to me or the post office .
Requested that packages be delivered to apartment door and security code was given.
Packages were left in the foyer and delivery pic sent . ( previous Dragonfly text - " don't worry packages will be delivered to a secure location" )
So an hour later after delivery - the packages aren't there.

3x with Amazon customer service chat . Wait 2 days . Then email - from Amazon - packages were delivered - no refund .

Our first line on the delivery address Amazon has says:
RING DOOR BELL persons name
persons address

About 20% of the time the package is delivered to our detacted home and the door bell gets rang.

This shows you the attention to detial (or lack thereof) the delivery drivers have.
Or their lack of English reading skill.
They only read the app for the next address.
Match address with package address.
Grab and drop the package.
Snap the pic.
And move on.

Left a complaint on the Dragonfly online form . Just finished a customer service call .
Delivery was to a small apartment building in Charlottetown . No security camera. I'm in PEI for the season . I'm out in the country , with poor cell reception . It's $150 - But, don't know if I have the patience to follow-up

My story isn't as bad, but maybe a little funnier.

After a couple of weeks of having to "push too hard" for my morning ritual, I ordered a "Squatty Potty" from Amazon, along with some other general items.

They arrived very early in the morning, and I got a call from the delivery guy asking to be let into my apartment building, which I did by pressing a certain number on my phone, and then went back to sleep.

When I later woke up, and around 10am went to see what had arrived, there were the other items. all nicely enveloped or boxed.

But also there, with no wrapping or box at all, was my Squatty Potty, in all its glory, for all my neighbours on the same floor to see.

It was the only item I have ever received from Amazon that was not boxed, or wrapped in some way.

Jeez!

I honestly believe Amazon delivery drivers do not bother to read the instructions at all. Multiple times I've had something delivered and specifically told them to leave it inside the door on the porch as it's open and leads to the sun room which leads to the actual house. Every single time they leave it on the porch instead. Luckily nothing has been stolen yet.

I typically don't use Amazon at all, or order things online for that matter, in part due to issues like these. My apartment building is quite old and doesn't have a buzzer system so I could easily see an order I make online vanishing into thin air on me. Do they even give you the option to select which delivery service your package is sent through anymore? It seems as if they just default all shipments to the lowest bidder. I recall years ago being able to choose between say Canada Post, UPS or Purolator. Not sure if that's still a thing or not

You can set up a delivery location near you as your default shipping address with Amazon.

It means you have to go to that location to pick the order up, but at least it's secure.

I ordered a new mattress from Amazon for my guest bedroom, but they accidentally delivered it to the wrong house across the street. I contacted Amazon, and they ended up giving me a full refund. A couple of days later the homeowners came back from vacation realized the mattress had been delivered to their place by mistake, and came over to let me know I could come pick it up.

So I ended up with a free mattress thanks to the delivery mix-up!

It suck’s that they didn’t even refund you though…

I've used Amazon a few times. When I was working I usually had it delivered to where I worked or to one of my neighbours but more recently just home delivery because I can be home when deliveries are made. One thing I've always told people I've worked with and friends, if living in apartments, is to have it delivered to them at work or if they have a trusted retired person have it delivered to them.

Once delivered and they send proof of delivery proof to you and it's gone by the time you come home, then it's on you and not them because they fulfilled their obligation.

One of my mildly interesting, but somewhat off-tangent stories.

About 5 years ago I was driving south on Bathurst. Stopped at a stoplight behind another car. While waiting for the light to change I was distracted while cleaning out my centre console, and lightened my brake pressure.

Without realizing it, I slowly drifted into an SUV in front of me. The middle-aged lady in the SUV and I both got out of our cars to see if there was any damage.

None was visible, but the lady said she wanted to make sure there was no internal damge to her car. So I gave her my phone number just in case.

Her car dealer told her there was $1,600 or so internal damage. So her husband called me to advise me of that, and I said ok, I'll send you a cheque in the exact amount which I did.

3 years later I got a phone call from her husband, saying they never got the car fixed, but had just traded it in for a new car, and got full value for the trade-in, without any mention of rear bumper internal damage.

He asked for my e-transfer information, and sent me back the full amount I had sent to them.

I was astounded!

Amazon's standard to a house is to leave it on the porch, take a picture and leave. They aren't required to do more, regardless of what instructions you put on it. For everyone person who says they want a ring or knock when they have a package left is another person who gets upset that there was a ring or knock that wakes up a kid, or wakes themselves up if they work different hours. If been in the delivery business for over 35 years with a large company and the people who think that just because something is written on the package means I have to do it is crazy. I often just say "you can write on there that you want your driver to wear a pink tutu and that doesn't mean I'm going to do it".

I'm surprised that you get 20% of the time the guy rings the bell. They generally look to the address line and nothing else, because nothing else on the label is really relevant to them.

I ordered 3 identical computer monitors from Best Buy. A few days later I was driving home and ahead of me a Canada Post truck turns on my street, by the time I turned the corner the delivery truck had stopped at my place and the delivery guy ran out of his truck with one monitor and dropped it at my door and ran like he had put a bomb there. I stepped out of my car as he was headed back to his truck, I asked him if there was only two others. He told me there was only one. I was driving home at about the same time the next day, by coincidence the there was a Canada Post truck ahead of me turning on to my street, it was the same guy. I pulled up behind him and and the same guy from the day before steps out of the truck with two monitors. I later checked the tags on the boxes, they were sent out from the warehouse at the same time and had sequential tracking numbers. I think the Canada Post guy was trying to score a couple of free computer monitors.

There is a reason why they make Amazon drivers take a picture of the package in front of your house, that in itself does not stop them from taking the package after the picture.
I suspect after initial popularity and the rise of Amazon, people are getting tired of the hassle and prefer to go to the store and see the goods before they buy. Many retail stores have died off the last few years, I think there will be a new crop of retail stores coming along as the economy recovers after Trump croaks.

One of the things I love most about the new place I moved to a while back is that they have a security desk in the foyer so all deliveries have to be left with security. Prior to that I would have packages left on my porch regardless of instructions which would lead to me constantly checking to see if it had showed up so it wouldn't get stolen.

One thing many overlook on the Amazon site are the parcel locker locations. I didn't even realize for the first year after I moved that the Petro Can store across from my house had one. I get stuff sent there quite often, especially if it's something I don't want anyone in the house to intercept, especially at Christmas time.

condo complex i live at does this too and its an absolute godsend they send you a notification and you can just go pick it up whenever without needing to worry about someone stealing it off your porch
