If I recall, there was a switch in the Romanian government and then Trump won and it was made clear he wanted them free, so they were left to travel.
So yes, political pressure and corruption seems to explain a lot of things in that trial.
That said, all those early back and forth court hearings weren't really visible to the public, so it is very hard to tell what happened for certain.
The Tates are on record as saying that they set up shop in Romania because the Romanian govt was notably corrupt. However, the Tates also aligned with the Far Right pro Putin presidential candidate.
That sets up a # of possibilities. Let's start with:
1. The Tates spread bribes around when they set up their sex trafficking op.
2. The bribes did not 100% work because they backed the wrong faction in the local political scene. So they got charged. Plus, the Romanian govt looted their luxury cars and watches and that was pretty yummy for the corrupt local officials.
3. The Romanians got bribed more to delay the trial.
4. The local pro Putin candidate got arrested and jailed to take him out of the election. Not good for the Tates. That meant that the charges didn't get dropped and the house arrest continued.
5. But Trump got elected and Romania did him a solid and let the Tates go to the US on "extended bail". That essentially killed the prosecution and got the Tates out of the EU where they would automatically be extradicted to the UK for the British rape and sex trafficking charges to be tried. (Pending more bribes from the Tates of course. But who wants that?! Hell, this is getting expensive!!!!!)
6. Now the Tates are in the US and clearly won't go back to Romania.
Sound like a narrative that might have happened?
