So, it's a Carolina vs Vegas Finals. Interesting it was Marner who blocked a trade to Carolina.
Vegas made the Finals with Marner while Carolina made the Finals by replacing Rantanen with players not named Marner.

Good for Marner. I'm a big Marner fan when he was in Toronto. It's just the few idiot fans who threaten Marner on social media after the game 7 collapse vs Florida, that drove him out of town, and I'll add the media too (particularly Steve Simmons of The Toronto Sun). It's not the the whole Leafs fan base that is to blame. Most Leafs fans are happy for Marner, but where was that performance in 2023-2024? Being a team that has more depth and 4 players that don't take up %44 of the team's salary cap helps (I blame Leafs management for that).

The series is only 2-1, the cup isn't won in 3 games.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to June 26.

If VGK ends up losing this game, I will put the blame directly on Leafs whipping boy Marner. Should have converted on penalty shot.

Here's an interesting stat, in a single playoff season prior to this all with the Leafs Marner's highest goals total was 3.
That's 9 seasons.

All this says is that the organization as a whole (coaches, management , media etc.) couldn't realize his potential to the fullest. The guy is clearly capable given the right conditions, it is also clear that he wasn't drafted (years ago) by mistake, somebody saw the potential.

He was a Mark Hunter pick because of his ties to the London Knights. Sadly it was the only good selection by Hunter the so called birds eye for talent when he was a member of the Leafs staff. But it was a deep draft in 2015 and Marner would've been a top 6 pick for sure.

I'm pointing at the Leafs' sad and incompetent coaching staff on this one. Marner popped 3 goals in 1 period last night.

I think it's a good thing Marner is having this success from a Leafs standpoint. Clear evidence that Shanahan was handed all this gold and he mangled it. Everyone knew you can't have 4 forwards taking up half the cap and filling the rest of the team from the scrap heap and all of them soft to boot. There definitely was a divide with the core and the rest of the team. Berube recognized it. You need a team and everyone playing for each other.

Everyone knew Leafs were soft and missing grit. They still are. I believe the new GM and Sundin will change that. Sundin played with plenty of gritty players who were part of the core. Players like Gilmour, Tucker, Roberts, Corson, Mogilny, Domi. Leafs recognized it. Hence the rentals of Foligno and O'Reilly but one rental is not going to change the DNA of the team. Treliving recognized it but couldn't execute. He used the term snot.

Vegas knows what they're doing. The whole team is big and full of grit. The one playoffs where they were dominant they also had one small skilled winger who happened to win the Conn Smythe. He was very well insulated. Played with a lot of determination.
I remember when Vegas won the Cup in 2023, plenty were expounding how Leafs should build their team like Vegas.
