I remember when they had the first showdown at Sherwood country club in 1991 between Tiger and David Duval. During the broadcast they showed Wayne Gretzky's house and standing on the porch watching the golf on that hole in the house beside Gretzky's was Claude Lemiuex. He was Gretzky"s neighbour, talk about a juxtaposition of players.

#1. Kent Hughes has said that he wants to build a team that "can win for a number of years". Any hockey fan should be able to realize that is not a claim that he intends to build a "real dynasty" that wins 3+ Stanley Cups in a row. Its that he intends to build a championship level team that will seriously contend for Cups over a long period, and will win some.

#2. Your "inclined to believe" something that Hughes never said, and that no team has done for 40 years.
Believing we are the team that will win 3+ consecutive cups in a row is over the top.

I'm happy where we are NHL and system wise,. it's been a tough series, we were lucky to get to round 3, and we are tired.
We were not built to be at our best this year either.
Win for a number of years in a market that has only won at best a hand full of cups if any means something completely different from a market that has had three dynasties. What's the point of having goals and aspirations if you don't aim for the highest of heights. Especially when they have players on their roster who are breaking records set from when the Habs had their previous dynasties.

As I've already stated this team has everything it needs to make a dynasty a reasonable goal. They have a solid, highly talented core of players signed to contracts that are absurdly team friendly. They have even more highly talented prospects who have yet to make an appearance in the NHL AND they still have all their draft picks over the next three years (save for this year's 5th round that was sent to the Sharks with Carey Price's contact) which are expected to be very strong draft years.

Compare this to every other team that's won the cup since the salary cap came into effect. They had all mortgaged the future for winning now by trading away draft picks and prospects. Take a look a Colorado or Florida right now, this year was probably the best chance they'll have in a while. Florida does have at least one first round draft pick this year but the cupboard is pretty sparse on the prospect end of things. Their core is starting to age out with nearly all of them being in their thirties and they are getting injured at an ever increasing rate. Colorado is even worse as they don't have any first, second or third round picks for the next three years.

This year was not supposed to be the year they break out and start winning cups. The odds of them winning three in a row against this Carolina team are slim. I'd say there's still at least a year maybe two more before the expectations should be cup or bust

It's amazing where this thread has went over 18 months,

It started 18 months ago, with a biased Hab hater (Fun for All) and other Leafs fans who were saying the Habs sucked.
And 18 months later it has progressed to an overzealous fan who believes the Habs will be a Real Dynasty, and win 3+ Cups in a row.

We are in very good shape though as a franchise. Those Leaf fans who commented on the first page, can't feel good on how fortunes have been reversed.
I'm glad to see you are finally acknowledging that a dynasty is three cups in a row. 🤪

But in all seriousness, 18 months ago there was a lot of unknowns with this team. Montembault was our starter and it wasn't clear whether Flower would pan out, Dobes wasn't even in the conversation yet. Our defense wasn't looking quite as solid either, but Hudson and Dobson have certainly helped a great deal in that regard. There were also questions about Slafkovsky, whether he would ever breakout, and Demidov being able to transition to the NHL successfully.

Had you of asked me 18 months ago if I thought the team at the time would be a potential dynasty in three years I would have been incredulous to say the least. Now that the most pressing questions surrounding the team have been settled it's much clearer now that they will be in all likelihood. In all my years of being a Habs fan they have never looked as good as they do now. Even the old timers that I know all agree they haven't looked this good since their run in the mid to late 70s. Absent any unforeseen circumstances, this team will be a monster for the next decade and I couldn't be happier to be witnessing it

Stunned to see that Claude Lemieux has passed away at 60.

He was the flame bearer at Monday night game and looked in good health.
Suicide too.

My xgf lived a few houses over from him when he lived here in 2010 in Etobicoke. I think they just moved from Arizona.
We would see them in the driveway a lot going in and out of the house because of Brendan and practice/going to games.
They seemed pretty chill, like the typical 4 member family.
Sad man.

Habs are fucking pathetic, only 6 shots on a pumkin like Freddie Andersen. When all of Canada is behind you, you fuckin fold like a cheap suitcase.

I was surprised by St. Louis comments after game 4. He didn't seem to be considering any change in approach or strtategy. The reports were trying to suggest the Hab players shoot more, but he didn't seem to go for it.

So he thinks they can win the cup by getting outshot 500- 6 every game?

They blew all my expectations for this season out of the water. They finished third in a very stacked Atlantic Division and managed to fight off the two teams that should have easily bounced them.

Has to be different year than 1991. They were either in high school or college back then.
Maybe 1999. based on Duval's peak.

Well it looks like this season was the last we will see Brendan Gallagher in a Montreal jersey. During locker clean-out he stated that he will be moving on. Which is a damn shame but was unfortunately inevitable. He's a real heart and soul player, one of my favorites in the fourteen seasons he played in Montreal. Always a pest in front of the net and never flinched when a Shae Webber clapper was coming his way.

As sad as it is to see him moving on like this it does put the team in a much better position going forward as not only does it free up a roster spot for young prospects but it will also add a decent amount of cap space.

Big question for the off season is going to be whether Kent Hughes adds via trade or does he sit on that extra cap space as at the end of next season Demidov, Newhook, Dobes and Kapanen will all need extensions
