Canadians are tapped out: Are tip screens bullying us into paying more?
From post-tax percentages to tip creep, the real cost of tipping is adding up fast
Sooner of later expect to be asked to tip the Amazon delivery driver
The screen/interface is specifically designed to promote tipping. They do not include a "No Tip" option in the main screen *on purpose*. It is not obvious to many people that "Other" can also be used to leave a zero tip.Because people are too shy to select "other amount" and type the amount the really want to tip, or just not tip when it's not required. They just select the "new minimum 20%" at a take-away counter because they don't want the employee to look funny at them.
At least in Québec, the tip is calculated pre-tax now.
Yes but these machines are not new, everyone should know by now that there's always a "custom" or "other" option. It's easy to take more 5 seconds to read what's in front of you and decide for yourself. Uhhhh...wouldn't you be tipping yourself?Next is being asked to tip at self-checkouts, which sometimes happens in the US.
We passed this law in Québec, and I hope the other provinces will follow suit. What I object to is tipping on top of tax. The pos. Machines should be programmed to a percentage of the pre tax amount
That is absolutely asinine! The worst I heard about from a friend was a mechanics shop with tip prompts that went Good Service - 10%, Average service - 15%, Above Average Service - 18%, Outstanding Service 20%.I don't know how common this is, but yesterday I saw a tip request, (with the default setting at 15%), for an online purchase. This wasn't food delivery, just a product to be shipped through the mail.
that has got to be the biggest sense of entitlement ive ever witnessed holy, it's getting out of handI don't know how common this is, but yesterday I saw a tip request, (with the default setting at 15%), for an online purchase. Omg... That is peer pressure because your mechanic is someone you trust and will have continued business interactions with - and if you don't tip them, then you start to erode that trust or you start to wonder if they will not do a good job on YOUR CAR. That is just straight up robbery to ask for tips. That is absolutely asinine! A fucking mechanic, who probably just relieved you of $1,000 for two hours of work, and they're looking for, at minimum, another $100 so you can thank the for doing their job.
The sense of gratification I would feel from pressing the No Tip option on that would be immeasurable.
Honestly if it gets to that point it might be time to look for a new mechanic, you'd definitely be better offOmg... For every dollar the customers donate, the store owner receives a personal income tax credit for charitable donations, as if the money had come out of their own pocket.I'm also getting tired of being asked to donate to charity when I'm purchasing items.

Been seeing people proudly post signs from restaurants telling you to tip and then showing the wage breakdown of their servers showing they only get paid $2.30/h and blaming the customer for not paying their wage. Absolutely ass backwards countryTipping culture in America is worse. Some places have a built in service charge with their iPads that can’t be over ridden. You either pay or you can’t buy. Tipping has basically become a consumption tax !
