They make to much noise and it is a bullet when it comes down.

In my large 10 floor apartment building, built in the late 60's, there are 3 garbage chutes per floor, and it seems they are used for general non-recyclable garbage that will fit in the chutes, and probably some organic garbage.

In the basement parking area there is an enclosed area with large blue bins for recyclables, which are hauled up to the driveway every Monday by the building staff, to be emptied by recyclable garbage trucks, and then hauled back down by the staff to the basement area. They are usually full again by Friday afternoon, so no point trying to take recyclable garbage down to them over the weekend.

Outside there are several large brown garbage bins for items that won't fit in the chutes. They are emptied every Friday by garbage trucks, and rarely fill up.

There are also 6 small green organic garbage bins, located along the side of the driveway, which are mainly used for poop bags, cuz a lot of the people in the building have dogs. It may be that some tenants also use the green bins outside for organic human food garbage, but I doubt it...

I would not want to live in a medium to high rise apartment or condo building that does not have chutes!

You are right. First it seems in my area the Fire Marshall banned the chutes because of fire hazard. The air will feed the fire in a high rise.

Which brings to your comment some people are sick, they have to much shame in taking the garbage to the basement. So they buy 2'x3' bags so they can go down every four months to dump the garbage. Yes they keep it in their units. It smells bad, was giving a one to many warnings until the board threaten him with eviction notice even though you own the place it can be done.

33 storeys and no garbage chute is nuts. I get that there are elevators but there are only two of them...

Any condo or apartment that has 33 stories and only 2 elevators is nuts.

Heaven forbid one is tied up with a move, or one or both of them break down.

I couldn't climb down 33 flights, due to my aging knees, never mind climb up...

Before Covid our building was forced to upgrade the elevator; the government sort of hinted to do it, we thought it was a scam.
One single elevator for 8 floors, mainly old folks.
Yeah people coming back from the grocery store were not happy at all for 10 WEEKS.

Developers have become cheaper and more greedy. That's for sure. I drew the line at no lockers but this is a rat infestation begging to happen.

Hire some kids as a pool living in the building to be on call to help the old folks carry the groceries.
Pay them a few bucks per trip.

Indoors Usually
I'm on the 19th floor. I cant imagine having to carry garbage bags down in an elevator. Would be so busy.

And pizza boxes - so annoying to carry down - Its nice to just bend them and drop them in the garbage chute.

It's even stupider when you realize one of those elevators should be designated as a service elevator for moving in/taking things out which would in theory only leave one elevator...

In one of the above posts, it looks like Xix is complaining that garbage chutes make too much noise. I’m sure they can if they're poorly designed or if the walls are too thin, but my apartment is right next to the chute on our floor, and I never hear a thing.

The walls seem to be pretty good in this place. It seems like my neighbours never play music or watch TV — I never hear that sort of sound. But the couple in the apartment on one side of me do one noisy thing — they have loud sex, regularly, frequently. That’s all I hear — no music, no garbage chute, no television — just sex, and just from the apartment on the one side. I guess the lady in the apartment on the other side doesn’t have a boyfriend. Actually, I saw her in the hallway recently with a guy who seemed boyfriendish. Who knows — it’s none of my business, especially since she’s not making enough noise for it to be my business.

I am in an older building which I assume has thicker walls and except for the person above me which sometimes it seems like he has a woodworking side business, the building is quiet. I never read about any soundproofing with these new buildings.

My older building has all concrete bearing walls. I never hear my neighbours, and they never complain about my loud electric guitar...

I don't play it after 9 pm, just in case.

There is a very loud, when it slams shut, garbage chute just down the hall from me. The tiny room it is in has a self-closing door. I never hear it in my apartment.
