Has anyone here holidayed in Barbados?

I am trying to plan a warm vacay for next year -- looking at March or early April -- and I want to go somewhere new.

I've been to Cuba loads of times and love it there, but with all shortages and other disruptions going on there, I don't think I'm going to be going back any time soon.

I've been to Dominican Republic once, but it was kind of "meh".

Mexico doesn't interest me in the least.

I've heard great things about Barbados, though, so I thought I would maybe give it a go. I'm not looking for anything fancy -- just want to book a hotel, sit by the pool and/or beach, relax and take in the local culture a bit.

I am curious to hear the experiences of others -- would you recommend it, if you have been?

I too have done Cuba and Dominican many times. I am also looking at Barbados, if I might suggest something.. Which I am doing, last week of July. First week of Aug. CHOP FESTIVAL, Bridgetown Barbadoes..it acually starts at the begining of July but the best, including the big parade are the last couple of weeks

Would that be the Crop Over festival?

If you end up going, please remember this thread and let me know how it goes!

Barbados has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, but thats where it stops. The demographic there absolutely sucks. Food is a hit or miss.

I'd also check if its seaweed season.

Never went, but I agree with Dominican, not much to do and I won't go back. Jamaica is reasonable, if you're looking for action Hedonism 2 is well known. But you don't need it, you can get action all over.

It won't be like Cuba you will have to 'tolerate' some Americans being there. But Barbados is beautiful, great beaches, safe and well kept. Probably pricier than Cuba, DR or Jamaica however.

I have a friend that keeps going back to Aruba. She has been to many of the Caribbean islands and found Aruba to be the best for what she was looking for. Just to chill out, good food and great beaches and nice people. Just my 2 cents

OK, so I have to ask since you mentioned it -- have you been to Hedonism II?

I'm curious what those places are like, because I get the feeling a single guy like myself could show up and find the place overrun with mostly other single guys looking for action, lol.

Or, another scenario, like my first time visiting Vancouver's Wreck Beach -- at the time Canada's only nude beach -- and expecting to see loads of lovely nude young women (I was 21 myself at the time) and finding the place overrun with nude old guys and women who, let's just say, I had no interest in chatting up.

I was there visiting I wasn't staying, I saw a few of the chicks that were working they were young and gorgeous. I stayed in Negril , but you don't need to go to hedonism, lots of action even in Negril. But its slow pace, people take it easy there, no pyramids or things to see. Lots of tourists get high on the weed and drink their 100 proof rum and at night time they go to the clubs or have a reggae concert. Lots of bugs in the hotel depends where your staying, lots of open windows etc. I think its much poorer than Barbados, but I was never in Barbados.

Aruba is a literal paradise. It's not cheap. But just an incredible place all around.

I saw this on the post today, maybe of interest for Diabolo

Canadians flocking to Cayman Islands drive record-breaking tourism numbers this year
Canadian visits to the Caribbean territory were up 47 per cent in February, the highest number of Canadian visitors for any month ever

Amid rising airfares, global political unrest and strained relations with America, Canadians continue to seek out sunny destinations, especially in the cold months of winter. And Cayman Islands is the latest destination to report record numbers of visitors from our country.

The self-governing British Overseas Territory, situated between Jamaica and Cuba in the western Caribbean, finished last year with record-breaking numbers of Canadian tourists, with a total of 32,206 stay-over visitors.

Canada became the first country to surpass pre-pandemic numbers of visitors, with growth of 7.1 per cent year over year, and monthly visitation records in March, July, September, November and December.

This came as Canadian visits to the United States declined sharply, falling 22 per cent in the first half of 2025 over the previous year, according to Statistics Canada.

And while our country remains far behind the United States — 82.2 per cent of visitors to Cayman Islands in 2025 came from south of the border — it easily ranked above third-place Britain, with 3.1 per cent or just over 14,000 visitors.

The current year got off to an even stronger start for the island territory, with February seeing 49,075 stay-over visitors, a 10.1 per cent increase year over year and the second-highest February total on record.

Canada drove that month’s growth with 6,102 Canadian visitors, a whopping 47 per cent increase year over year and the islands’ highest number of Canadian visitors for any month ever.

Add in cruise ships and Cayman Islands saw 208,992 visitors that month, two and half times its own population of about 89,000.
Not every Caribbean destination was so well attended. Jamaica, Barbados, Saint Lucia, Dominica, Anguilla, Grenada, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Bonaire and Antigua and Barbuda all recorded declines in Canadian traffic in 2025, attributed to “rising costs, changing vacation habits, and competition from other regions.”

Cayman Islands’ fortunes were largely driven by increased air service. In December, Porter Airlines started offering five flights a week from Toronto and Ottawa to Owen Roberts International Airport on Grand Cayman near the capital of George Town.

“Grand Cayman is the fifth sun vacation market that Porter is launching this winter from both Toronto Pearson and Ottawa,” said Andrew Pierce, the airline’s vice president, network planning and reporting, at the time. “Canadians’ travel interest in the Caribbean is steadily growing and now they can easily access the Cayman Islands from two prominent hubs in our network.”

Air Canada, WestJet and Air Transat also offer service to Cayman Islands, with the website caymancompass.com reporting that capacity from Canada is up 28 per cent year over year.

Marketing is another factor. Last November, Cayman Islands had a week-long broadcast partnership with media giant Rogers, putting the destination in front of more than a million viewers of morning show Breakfast Television.

Cayman Islands Department of Tourism also announced last month a partnership with Canada’s M5 agency to support media planning and position it the destination as a premium travel option in the Canadian market.

“By partnering with an agency that brings deep insight into Canadian travellers and proven expertise in destination marketing, we are strengthening our ability to attract high-value visitors, support airlift, and drive sustainable growth for the Cayman Islands tourism industry,” Gary Rutty, minister for tourism and trade development, said in a press release.

My Sister went and she also says its beautiful, but very expensive.
Yes, I saw one all-inclusive resort in Barbados priced at $19,000 for a week. Even if I were uber-wealthy, there's no way in hell I'm laying out that much for a one-week vacation, lol.

I am just looking at doing a week at a hotel.

Thanks for the piece on the Cayman's -- an interesting read!

We went once and stayed with friends who were renting a house. Had one good meal in a restaurant that was owned by a Canadian, spent some time on a public beach which was okay, but otherwise didn't enjoy the trip very much. A neighbour owns a condo that we could probably rent but we have no desire to go back.

So stayed in the Caymans. There is some sticker shock there. The Cayman dollar is worth $1.25 USD and pegged there. Food prices are high. Stays are high as well. Flight was easy, Porter runs there direct. Fantastic snorkeling, scuba and other water sports. No gambling.

Stayed in Aruba a few times. About the same, gambling allowed. In both cases if you have the money go for it.
