It's about getting donors at this point for the NDP. Their far-left supporters don't have any money and you can't campaign with Party funds on empty.
Avi is the only shot they have to win back that Working class/Union base. The base that actually make money.

Lewis, Canada’s former ambassador to the United Nations and one-time leader of the NDP in Ontario, was 88.
He is the father of Avi Lewis, who was elected leader of the federal NDP on Sunday.
The Stephen Lewis Foundation announced his death on its website today.
Lewis held multiple posts with the UN after his four-year stint as Canada’s ambassador, including as a special adviser to then secretary-general Kofi Annan, as deputy director of UNICEF and as the UN’s special envoy for HIV-AIDS in Africa.
In 2003, he co-founded the Stephen Lewis Foundation, which as of last year had raised more than $200 million for grassroots organizations fighting AIDS on the ground in Africa.

I saw a comedy sketch once where there was a protest rally, with what appeared to be hundreds of people in attendance. The camera man moved towards the rear of the crowd, and there were about twenty people in the front, and twenty more behind them, holding and moving large signs with picture of people printed on them.
One of the ways the NDP has always shot itself in the foot: They look for support from people at the lowest end of the income scale, (anyone whose sole sources of income are a monthly government cheque and deposit bottles and cans returned to a Beer Store), and a major part of their campaign platform is large hikes to taxes on liquor and cigarettes, which are often a big part of their supporter's monthly budget.
