i agree it's getting way out of hand the whole tipping culture is getting way too americanized in recent times, for shit that in no way should require tipping
you're telling me i go to a pizza place pick up the pizza myself and pay at the counter and you're still begging for a tip? for what?

Ya it's beyond ridiculous at this point. I't's not a tip it's a financial obligation which is not fair in this current financial climate. Most people can barely afford to eat and now we're expected to pay extra to someone that put a pizza slice in a box and added a napkin? What exactly did you do to enhance my dining experience and earn an additional reward? Time to end it all together.imo

The odd time I get a coffee at Tim's drive thru I just tap my card. I'd be annoyed if I had to press no on the machine and stop going there.
I think that's actually part of the frustration - tip menus coming up at fast food places when a business knows people use tap regularly. Wastes too much time and really defeats the whole purpose of tap if you have to hit 'other', then 0, then enter, then ok, then tap.

Last time I was treating a lady at a Thai place, they suggested bringing us sparkling water, I did not ask if there's any extra cost cos I did not want to sound cheap, turns out it's 8 dollars...it's a scam, so I gave $5 less in tips.

Also I only tip the percentage based on pre-tax amount, so I just look at the tax, which is 13%, and give roughly the same amount. That's more than generous.

It is weird now. Different everywhere. In Europe they were happy to get a couple dollars. Same with Costa Rica when there. Here they have minimum 18% on most machines. Even 20 or 25%. It is getting pretty bad. I do remember the tip jars. Maybe with digital currency people are not paying with cash any longer so no change to drop in the jar.

Mind you, I like the tip. :devilish: 😘

I don't mind tipping at restaurants especially when the food is good and the same thing when I get takeout from those same restaurants, otherwise no tips for any other places. And when I tip, it's based on the value of the meal, NOT including taxes.

Can I pick up on this a bit?

1) Why do you not mind tipping in restaurants? In Ontario, the minimum wage is pretty decent and, unlike in the USA, waiters are paid at least the minimum wage. Are their jobs harder than the jobs of people in McDonald's? Why do they deserve a tip? Briging food, and checking on you is their job.
2) What does the quality of the food have to do with tipping? Tips go to waiters, not cooks, and waiters have nothing to do with food quality.
3) Why do you tip based on the value of the meal and not a fixed amount? Does bringing steak and expensive wine require more effort than bringing spaghetti and cheaper wine?

Tipping in general and tipping based on the price of the meal is nothing but a stupid, outdated tradition, even in restaurants. Non-expected fixed amount tipping for very good service is OK, but it should be like 1 out of 5 times you go to a restaurant, not every time. Tipping must be something you want to do, not be expected to do, and servers should be happy when they get a tip, even a small one, but not expect it. Like when you tip $50 an agency SP or an MP after a really good session - for me, it happens about 10% of the time.

It all started in the railroad days where black porters relied on tips for income.

When I was in Germany you just rounded up to the nearest Euro at restaurants to not deal with coins.

In much of Asia its considered an insult.

It is even more silly to tip an escort, a massage gal, or a stripper. Never have in like 40 years of experience and never will. Never been an issue, as I treat industry gals as professionals, not like railroad porters or minimum-wage restaurant workers. Also, never tipped any hotel maids, which I guess some folks do.

Tipping culture has gotten too Americanized all across the globe, tipping at a sit down restaurant where they bring you everything or a delivery driver who delivers you food is one thing, but expecting tips for standing behind the counter doing nothing? Get real
its unreal like i get that in the us servers get paid around 2 dollars an hour and make up the rest in tips but servers here get paid almost the exact same as minimum wage damn near 20 dollars an hour so why do they need 30% tips for standing around looking pretty?

It’s simple. Tipping is not mandatory, though it is customary in a sit down restaurant. The custom is about 15%-20%, pre tax. It is not customary for takeout, nor should it be expected, so I have no guilt in entering “zero” when prompted to tip when taking out or at fast food. I don’t worry about it, get angry about it, get self conscious about it or apologize. Just because the “machine” prompts me, I still am capable of making my own decision, I don’t answer to the interac machine. Lol

Servers do get minimum wage, though keep in mind that full time hours at minimum wage is not even 40k a year. If you are supporting a kid or two, this is perilously close to the poverty line, if not below.

I don't like tipping at Buffets, I'm the one getting my own plates.
It's kinda funny because while menu knowledge is not needed, waiters actually work harder physically at buffets because of multiple trips to clear plates.

It's ok to tip less but remember tips are also split for hostesses, bartenders etc as well.

5 bucks to a hotel maid, 10 if you are a bit messy it not a hardship. And believe me they work hard and have to deal with a lot of gross things in hotel rooms.
