In an apparent awkward moment at the Oval Office on Thursday stateside, U.S. President Donald Trump referenced Pearl Harbor in his first meeting with Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi after her landslide electoral victory.

When asked by a Japanese reporter on why the U.S. did not inform allies such as Japan before carrying out the attacks against Iran on Feb. 28, the U.S. president said it was to maintain the element of surprise.

“Who knows better about surprise than Japan ... Why didn’t you tell me about Pearl Harbor?”

Trump was referencing the surprise Japanese attack on the U.S. Pacific Fleet in 1941, which saw the deaths of over 2,400 personnel and drew the U.S. into World War II.

Takaichi appeared to draw a deep breath and lean back in her seat with an uneasy expression.

Trump said that the surprise attack on Iran had helped the U.S., adding that it “knocked out 50% of what we anticipated” in the country within the first two days.

During the meeting, Trump praised Japan for “stepping up” to assist in efforts to secure the Strait of Hormuz, “unlike NATO.“

Before the meeting, Japan, as well as Britain, France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands had released a joint statement expressing their readiness to “contribute to appropriate efforts to ensure safe passage through the Strait.”

Trump had called on Japan and other countries to help secure the Strait of Hormuz, but Takaichi had reportedly said Monday that there were no plans to dispatch naval vessels to escort boats in the Middle East.

Her office also said in a post on X that there was “no specific request from the United States to Japan for the dispatch of vessels.”

Japan’s prime minister on Tuesday said that the government was considering what could be done within the framework of the country’s law. Japan’s Self-Defense Forces are governed by its pacifist constitution, that renounces war and the threat or use of force for settling international disputes.

Trump had taken aim at NATO allies earlier this week, saying that the alliance was “making a very foolish mistake” by not getting involved in the war.

In response, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius reportedly said on Monday that “This is not our war, we have not started it,” a stance that was also adopted by French President Emmanuel Macron.

Subsequently, Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Thursday that “we have declared that as long as the war continues, we will not participate in ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, for example, by military means,” according to Reuters.

Trump would joke about the Holocaust with the PM of Germany.
He could say ICE detention facilities are child's play compared with
Nazi concentration camps.

There is a great still photo of the Japanese PM's immediate reaction to his comments. She looks like she wants to just explode for a second or three.
Watch Japanese PM's reaction when Trump makes Pearl Harbor joke #shorts

What a maroon. He's forgetting - or given his extraordinary ignorance - doesn't know that the USA considered a surprise attack, like Pearl Harbor, a BAD thing, not to be admired like he's admiring his surprise attack on Iran. In fact, i believe the exact quote by the then US president Roosevelt: "December 7th, 1941, a date that will live in infamy."

Trump is another one with no self awareness. While bragging about his surprise attack on Iran and comparing it to Pearl Harbour, he failed to recognize what happened to Japan after the attack. It didn’t knock out the US and it ended up losing. Likewise, the US and POS Nation attack has not knocked out Iran and Iran has been dictating the strategic terms.

Sometimes you need a guy like Trump on the case ok ! Although, the guy is an asshole several times over which makes it difficult to get a “ deal” unless one has no cards or choices, he does remind Japan of their egregious sneak attack but at at a very inconvenient and curious time In this 2026 meeting.
However let us see what Japan wants. Takaichi like her mentor the late Shinzo Abe, is a proponent of rearming Japan and rewriting their pacifist constitution towards letting Japan again have a military that can fight on foreign soil again for the first time since WW2 and because Japan has 90 % of it’s oil needs and energy concerns passing through the now shut off Straight of Homurz, Japan might necessarily reconsider ignoring Trump’s jab.
So now there is a POTUS and a Japanese PM, both in desperation so that a deal just might have to happen.
Because of history, previously America has strongly discouraged Japan from raising an army which would participate in foreign wars and developing their own unique weapons of mass destruction which would likely be superior to America weapons eventually.
Japan still is sort of a vassal state of America, American Army bases still have not left Japan since WW2 , yet Japan holds a lot of US debt in the form of T Bill holdings of around $1.1 trillion US.

Apparently Iran is lulling is opponents into a false sense of ......... Victory ????
It's hard to know through the fog of misinformation out there by everyone from all sides.

Some issues though - the criteria for winning is asymmetric. USA has to depose the leader or get a surrender. The Iranian leadership only needs to survive. Smaller powers vs larger know that. George Washington knew that. So did Ho Chi Minh. They lost more battles than they won but ultimately won the war.

You hope US/Israel have turned someone in the Iranian govt who will seize control from the mullahs. Just bombing them won't be fully enough unless you can kill the top 50 or so folks. (Not sure of exact number, but a lot of folks).

So, let's see.

The fact the world is saying the USA is losing is a victory. All they have to do is survive.

that's quite ironic coming from you

no
the primary objective is to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons- their nuclear infrastructure has been decimated
the secondary objective is to eliminate Iran's capabilities to conduct/ Fund terrorist activities - this will require more bombing
Regime change would be a bonus welcomed by the Iranian people and the entire civilized world -

You hope US/Israel have turned someone in the Iranian govt who will seize control from the mullahs.
That would be a better plan than allowing hate filled religious lunatic leaders to lead you to destruction

Just bombing them won't be fully enough unless you can kill the top 50 or so folks. (Not sure of exact number, but a lot of folks).
No the IRGC has a whole lot more than 50 people

but
AI Overview
Estimates of ISIS fighters killed vary widely, with over 80,000 deaths reported by American and allied airstrikes as of late 2016
.
The IRGC may be a more fanatical and tougher lot than the now dead ISIS Islamic nutjobs

So, let's see.
yes we will
a whole lot of death and misery caused by irrational Islamic nutjobs

it is mystifying why you support such evil

When the war was over the US developed nukes by recruiting nazi scientists, many whom were war criminals. They went on to stage the 2 largest terrorist attacks in history in Nagasaki and Hiroshima. What the US did to Japan was on par with what Hitler did to the jews. If Trump wasn't getting so many bribes from the jews he would make fun of the holocaust too

Its way beyond that. You can see by how irrelevant Pahlavi has become. The people have rallied behind the government and they have seen that american support was all bullshit. Even more, they see america bombing them but their own army standing strong against them and acting like the adults in the room.

The government was pretty shitty and autocratic but you have to give it to them, they prepped for this war brilliantly and are kicking america and Israel's asses.

It's not son of Shah. He has 0 following it seems. It's hopefully some general. But a thought through strategy would hopefully have reached out to such a person.
