SMU is not really that good. Miami (OH) was lucky that the First Four is always played in Dayton.
That's a 42 mile drive from Oxford.

Miami will get a look at their first Power 4 conference team Friday with Tennessee.
I forgot about the game being so close for them. Definitely helps. I know little to nothing about SMU other than the oddsmakers had them favored by 6.5. As we know favorites often lose in this tournament, case in point yesterday. My bracket got pretty wrecked.

Same I have Arkansas, Michigan, Uconn and Illinois in my final four.
Arkansas is not consistent. Hpu beating a Wisconsin that beat a Michigan team was a big big suprise. Almost all my underdog lose yesterday haha. Lets see if Santa Clara and Akron can do something today.

Duke, houston arkansas and Michigan is my final 4.

11 VCU beats 6 North Carolina in OT

NC was up by 17 points with 11 minutes to play.

In 2011, Virginia Commonwealth was in the play-in game for the 11 seed, and made it to the Final Four.
I can't say I follow North Carolina.
Carolina was without their star player Caleb Wilson who will be a lottery pick if he goes into the NBA draft.
Certainly, that also impacts depth besides a whole lot of scoring.

As far as depth you can see teams like Siena put up a fight against Duke, but run out of gas playing only five. Now I'm not saying that UNC doesn't have a bench, but losing a star player pushes you down the bench.

For double-digit seeds, just getting into the Tournament makes the season a success. The next step up is to not be blown out. Next is to keep the score competitive into the second half. If they actually win a game, it often means that the coach will get a new job at a bigger school, or the team will join a more competitive conference.

The team which pisses me off the most is probably Gonzaga. I liked them in the 80's/ 90's because of John Stockton being an alumnus, and they played well in the late 90's as an underdog. I stopped liking them after 2006 because of Adam Morrison and 'the crying game'. They often have good Canadians on there roster, (Spokane, Washington is close to Eastern British Columbia and Western Alberta), but at this point, they should move up from the WCC.

I agree with all your points.

As far as coaches moving up, it's interesting to go to a Final Four. You will see Head Coaches and Assistants around town networking for their next move. It's an industry convention as well as a basketball competition.

It's always been hard for me to object to paying players, watching coaches making great money and moving around for a bigger payday. Now that doesn't mean I like the current NIL compensation system.

A good example is current Marquette coach Shaka Smart.

His first head coaching job was at VCU, who made the Final Four from the play-in game for the 11 seed in 2011. Four years later, he was the head coach of the Texas Longhorns. He was fired after the 2021 season, (two years of his contract bought out for $7.1 Million), after Texas as a 3 seed lost in the first round to 14 Abilene Christian.

Santa Clara 2 seconds away from an upset then Kentucky hit a game tying 3. Wow!! March madness!! Kentucky Survive
Of course I had Santa Clara in my big bracket pool but Kentucky in my family and friends bracket pool.

I was 11-5 on Thursday. Luckily none of those teams I have going to the Sweet Sixteen. But still I usually want to be at least 13-3 after day one.

They were up 3 with 6 seconds left. If they fouled (bonus FTs) to prevent the 3 that ties game they win. Bad coaching and awareness.

I have Duke and Arizona for the championship and Duke to win.
Good luck to all with brackets!

My brackets got smoked after day 2. I certainly didn't see either Texas or Nebraska going to the 16. In both my pools I did take Arizona to beat Houston in the final. My other final four participants were Iowa State and Michigan State. I'm really hoping that St. John's knocks off Duke. I can't stand the Blue Devils.

Duke ahead 72 - 70 against UConn with 10 seconds to go and with the ball.
The inbound goes perfectly but then ball was deflected when pass was attempted down the court.
UConn retrieves the ball and Mullin sinks a 3 from downtown to win the game. Insanity!
This is why it is called March Madness!
