The last few years I’ve found it fascinating watching documentaries on classic rock bands. Like Lynard Skynard, and The Band and Once We’re Bothers

Last year I was contemplating seeing the Steve Miller Band but didn’t pull the trigger. I also came late to the party with the Tragically Hip. Never saw them live unfortunately.

How about you? Any bands you might be seeing this year or regret never taking in a live performance?

And also the legends that keep performing to this day enhancing their performances with fun fact stories. Like Randy Backman here,

Randy Bachman has great posts on TikTok.

I followed him, as we both had shared Winnipeg memories from the 60's.

We conversed a bit, but too often his side of the conversation was obvious AI.

Some of the stuff we talked about, such as the early days of the Guess Who, and some of their early concerts in Winnipeg, especially the "invitation only" one for Prince Charles, seemed genuine.

Burton Cummings, also a "friend" on TikTok, gave me his phone number for WhatsApp conversations, as we were acquaintances back in the day. But he was more interested in talking about himself than shared Winnipeg 60's experiences...

We just hit a pub in the west end and hear bar cover bands do good live renditions of the tunes we enjoy.
Typically once a month.
Dinner sometimes with friends before the band comes on.
The two of us do that for about $100 a night.

I would rather do that 10-14 times a year than blow my wad on one mega concert fee in an out of town trip event.

Daft Punk is hands down my biggest regret. I had a chance to go see them on their Alive 2007 tour in Toronto but I had just came back from NYC that week where I saw Rage Against the Machine, Wu Tang Clan, Cypress Hill, Mos Def and Talib Kweli at Rock the Bells. I really wish I was alive and of age back in the 70s because I would have loved to see bands like the Doobie Brothers, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Earth, Wind and Fire, Kool & The Gang, Chic and ELO when they were in their prime but alas I was destined to be an 80s baby.

All great bands.. I have to admit I wasn't a big concert goer and my dad was protective of me concerned I might get caught up in the drug scene when I asked if I could go the next night to the same concert.

Bands I was lucky enough to see some were Super Tramp, The Who and The Beach Boys who at the time were a bit of a blast from the past but they put on great show. Had all the fans in their feet signing and dancing to all their mega hits

Also Springsteen and the E-street Band saw like 3 times during the 80s. Best bang for the $ as their shows went almost 4 hours. They had great music and Bruce added stories introducing some if his songs which always left me with a better appreciation of the song.

One weird thing About The Who concert was the opening acts in my case was Elvis Costello I believe who has a song or two on the radio at the time was bood through is whole set and stuff thrown up on stage. I couldn't understand it. My buddies told me it's just the Who fans they don't want to see anyone else but their band and the opening acts are just in the way of that. Saw them again at Maple Leaf Gardens the last show of their final tour. Don't remember if there was an opening acts that night.

One of the best shows I ever saw was Elvis Costello & The Attractions at the Theatre St. Denis in Montreal, shortly after the release of their first album.

Such intense energy!

A long time ago, but a few memories:

Neil & The Squires - basic high school band concert in the school gym, some kids listening, some kids dancing. Mostly cover songs, such as Louie Louie, Farmer John, etc.

Neil solo -just him and his Martin acoustic guitar. Some songs he wrote, mostly folk style. Very self-assured, and professional sounding. As was years later mentioned when he joined in an all-star charity group song, his voice was unique, and pitchy, but he answered that criticism with "Hey man, that's my style." I was friendly with a friend of Neil's who was at the show, Jim Donahue who was big in the Winnipeg folk scene. So we went to Neil's dressing room after the show. Have to say it was like I wasn't there as as far as Neil was concerned. What I remember most is that he used the word "fucking" as opposed to all my friends more common "fuckin'", as an adjective.

Paul Butterfield Blues Band was at the U of M field house. Buzzy Feiten on lead guitar as Mike Bloomfield had already left the group. As they were leaving I asked Buzzy how he got the great overdrive tone out of his Fender blackface Twin Reverb amp. He just said he put JBL speakers in it, and drove them real hard.

The Monkees were a family affair with my parents, brother, and sister, mainly because my 10 year younger sister was a fan. The Monkees were ok, and did their hits. But I was astounded at how good their opening act band was, with a great lead guitarist. But I don't remember their name.

I was too high to remember much about the Festival Express, except Leslie West of Mountain doing a 5 minute killer bluesy solo intro to their set on his Les Paul Jr.

I went to all those shows.
The minimum wage in 1965 was $1.25/hr so yes it was a lot of money. 1/2 day's work to get a ticket.
