While these ethnic tensions are real, wartime propaganda tends to amplify them especially narratives around independence and self-determination, and the idea that these groups can easily function as independent states.
These groups are not naïve.
They understand that while they may want more rights, autonomy, or even independence, the alternative can be decades of bitter civil war.
In such conflicts, the west will provide just enough support to keep the fighting going, but never enough for a decisive victory, which is by design.
Faced with that reality, many will ultimately choose to live with the more familiar devil.
