I too am on dutasteride and flowmax. Kept me from going into the emergency room to get a catheter because I can't pee. It has reduce my psa.

If the meds does not work, the next option is the turp surgery. Will be getting another ultrasound next month to measure the size of the prostate. Yup, getting old really bucks

It's still better than not getting old.

Avodart is the brand name for your Dutasteride. It’s supposed to be stronger than proscar which are both supposed to shrink the benign prostate.

Hey @Insidious Von, are you in remission now? Hope you feeling better. Sorry I don’t know the story.

I wonder what age is the ‘norm’ to start these prostate meds?

harrypalm, named after a Tommy Chong character. lol

Not sure if I can call it remission. I asked the oncologist how long will I be on the medication, she said indefinitely. That depressed me at first but my goal is to avoid further chemotherapy. I'll tolerate the fact that the meds is making me gain too much weight.

If you lead a healthy lifestyle, without throbbing in your taint, you don't need meds. Good luck to you.

Green laser surgery offered at Toronto Western Hospital is the least invasive most effective procedure to reduce prostate size that all men will experience after a certain age. Done under local sedation through the urethra. No cutting. Followed by radiological embolization that seals any blood vessels.

Thanks for the info. I'll tuck that one in my back pocket!

Flomax .. and some other prescribed med for the last 6 months. Seeing the urologist this month to see how effective the meds have been. TBH its been a whole lot better. IMHO stick with the professionals and see it through. With the increased prostate attention with your doctors can likely catch something early enough for them to recommend action. Supplements may seem to work or not. But your not getting medical care which I think is important.
No effect on your sex life though, eh? Aren't you the eiffel tower man?

Yep .. it has effected me and I've noticed over the last 6 months a downturn. One of the prescriptions is suppose to reduce testosterone and said it would reduce libido or desire. Not out of the game yet though. Takes me longer to pop and staying hard for a whole hour or more is challenging. Trying to stay active and rings have been helping. Will be looking into Viagra or cialis next visit.

My urologist tells me men over 50 should start getting a baseline and monitor as we get older.

Blood PSA test yes
Before increasing the flomax dosage they sent me to an ultrasound test. Where you drink water until you feel like your going to burst. They do the test. Then asked me to go pee until your empty. You know get it all out. I had to pee so bad my kidneys hurt lol. I should add it felt very much I had nothing left. But I guess it was a slower flow than I remember my younger self doing. It took so long as well to empty. Then they do another ultrasound test and compare the two.
I felt I was empty but in fact the test showed half empty. Seems like that is why you urinate a lot when you have an enlarged prostate or at least one of the main reasons.
More tests later this month and I don't know what they are yet other than what I just had. Probably a repeat of the ultrasound test and I have the blood rec in hand ready to go.
Will report back if you are all interested.
So my results turned out good. PSA results cut in half. And they had me pee into a container till I felt empty. Then the ultrasound showed I was empty.

Doc said it looks good and my PSA reading now will be the baseline for an annual test going forward.
Flomax and Dutasteride will have to keep taking going forward. Sucks but they said there is always risks in any surgery that could be irreversible.

I do feel better and can make a longer car ride without stopping somewhere. I still get up in the night but maybe only once instead of many.

Only downside with the drugs was the Dutasteride reduces your testosterone and was told it could lower my libido. Didn't notice a difference at first but for the last 6 to 8 weeks yes it's starting to be a problem.

I did some homework before going to the appointment and asked for Cialis low dose. Taken daily I don't have to time it. I was skeptical but was pleasantly surprised at the results. Also the info that came with Cialis indicates it does help relieve symptoms of BPH by relaxing the smooth muscle in the prostate and bladder. 30 tablets 130 bucks. Cost of a coffee and muffin per day. But was pleasantly surprised my benefits covered it leaving only a couple of bucks.

If your PSA is high, request an MRI. That's what they're doing now. Way more accurate than ultrasound. When you go for your PSA test, avoid sex, jerking off, strenuous exercise or ride a bicycle for 48 hours before the test. Those activities can give a false (higher) reading.

Is this covered by Ohip? Because some of the surgeries are not

Interesting as I wasn't advised to change any of my day to day routines by the drs that I recall. Perhaps my original test were not revealing high enough readings to be concerned with cancer at the time.

While the C word did get discussed it was just a remote possibility and if my test results were the same or worse then I we would be on to the next test. Only glad it's just BPH and they have some history now that gets checked going forward.

I have been on prescribed drug Tamsuloson which is similar to Flomax which works fine, however, one of its side effects is if you cum your semen stays in your body and flows into your bladder but since I am 84 years old that doesn't effect me anymore, LOL.

Doctors should always tell you to avoid sex or strenuous exercise before the test.

I am 70 years old now. I was suffering from an enlarged prostate for at least 15 years. I used to wake up 4 or 5 times during the night, and the daytime situation was equally uncomfortable. I tried a couple of over-the-counter medications as well as prescription Tamsulosin. None of them made any noticeable difference. Finally, 2.5 years ago, I had GreenLight Laser Therapy (I think it is called TURP, too). It was a life-changer. It is a minimally invasive surgery, and the patient normally goes home the same day. I was kept overnight because I take blood thinners, so I had to be under observation overnight. Now, most nights, I have 6 or 7 hours of uninterrupted sleep although I try to drink less liquids after 9:pM (I hardly ever go to bed before 2:AM)

That's interesting. I've never heard of that treatment. Did you have spinal or general anesthesia?

"Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is a common, highly effective surgical procedure to remove inner prostate tissue to treat moderate-to-severe urinary symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate (BPH). Done through the urethra with no external incisions, it improves flow and eases symptoms like frequent or weak urination."
