Is the economy much worse that we can see on the surface? I saw a shop lifter in a food store get caught stealing cheese.

I am wondering why she wanted to steal the cheese from a high-end store? What is wrong with Walmart? It is wrong that people want to take advantage of high-end stores that are less likely to prosecute.
Maybe things are not going well for her financially and she was stealing out of anger and frustration. Cheese can be a small expensive item to steal. I read an article a while back and cheese was on a list of most stolen item, along with things like pantyhose, gloves, socks and razor blades.

Getting banned from a high end store if you are struggling is not going to cramp your style too bad.

Getting trespassed from Walmart - that hits where it hurts for the poor.

My problem was that if she is struggling financially, why does she go to a high-end store, not Walmart? I understand people stealing high-value staff to sell, but stealing high-priced food items to eat? Why do "hungry" people who steal from supermarkets go for high-priced steak and not for pork chops? It is similar in calories and nutrition. Once they do it, they lose the right to play the "poor & hungry" card.

There are many reasons why people steal. need, greed, anger, opportunity. I saw a social experiment video where a bag of goods was left in a Home Depot parking lot like someone forgot it and left it behind. Some people returned it to the store and some people just snatched it up. Three minutes before they had no intention of stealing, but presented with the opportunity they took the bag of goods. You have seen the videos of 2-3 guys going into the LCBO with shopping trollies and snatching up 25 bottles of booze. these bottles will be sold for $20-25 each to people who do not want to steal themselves but will buy stolen goods from the thieves.

Both (opportunistic stealing and stealing of high value product for future resale) I understand. What is puzzling are (1) why a person who has financial difficulty to the point they decide to steal goes to a high-end store instead of Walmart (this excludes the opportunistic stealing argument) and (2) why steal the expensive items if they do not want to sell it (that excludes the resale argument)? If she were to go to Walmart and snatch a pack of ground beef, I would say "yes, people are desperate." If she goes to Whole Foods (or similar) and steals an expensive cheese, I say we have another thief who just wants to make excuses. The explanation to her choice of the store is simple- high-end stores are less likely to prosecute shoplifters

After going through a pandemic where the governments of the world spent massive amounts of money, <snip>
biden and justin printed money like drunken sailors, the fiat currencies value is deteriorating .

Per Gemini
A 2019 dollar is worth approximately $1.27 today (as of early 2026), reflecting a cumulative inflation rate of about 27.22% over the 7-year period. This means it requires roughly $1.27 now to match the purchasing power of $1 from 2019.

The economy has been bad since COVID, and even before that there were issues. But COVID disrupted supply lines and forced MANY retirements, leading to a labor shortage that helped spike inflation, which was attempted to be solved with mass immigration, which backfired spectacularly. I don't believe there has been any major positive news for Canada's economy in at least a decade. Prices: up. Productivity: down. Regulation: up. GDP-per-capita: down. An antagonistic president down south. Unstable trade. Creaking social systems. A bloated government. Middle class getting absolutely smothered. And AI on the horizon, if not already here. It's bleak.

Those are the people who are extrinsically motivated. They don't have a proper sense of right and wrong, hence they require laws and the fear of consequence to make them behave like decent people. They had no intention of stealing before because the risks were too high. Once the risks were low, they took the opportunity. These people are also why, IMO, religion was invented.

The people who returned the goods are intrinsically motivated. They have an inherent sense of right and wrong, and will do things because it's for the betterment of others and society. If you see someone returning a shopping cart, as one example, chances are they are this type of person.

It's hard to say what proportion of society is one or the other. And it's not a black and white line, either. For instance, someone who is intrinsically motivated may act poorly if they are desperate.

She should go to the LCBO where you can steal without fear of being caught.

Then sell the booze in the parking lot and go buy groceries with the proceeds.
Modern day problems require modern day solutions. 🤷‍♂️ :ROFLMAO:

The “liberal” media will never report how bad it actually is.
If you want something to blow your hair back, read Noam Chomsky‘s manufacturing consent. Truths.
And yes, as times get tougher and the one percent gets even smaller and the the 99% get into even more debt, there will be more crime. There will be more poverty there will be more social unrest. And the environment will keep getting shittier, not just do the climate change. More people seem to think littering is OK; send them to Mars I say.
Save your money and be kind to people even people you hate and that hate you.

meat has iron and cheese has calcium, I hope your not on a zero carb diet it causes brain damage.
I can't find anything that says this. I found one limited study that suggests some cognitive tasks are impaired in the first week after switching to a low carb diet (which makes sense, as your body is accustomed to getting glucose from carbs and is suddenly having to learn a different process). I found a whole host of studies suggesting low carb or keto diets improve brain health in the long run.
