It is an analogy not a comparison, to communicate the idea that assimilation isn't a battle of 2 cultures with 1 victor, but rather, evolution of a culture because of influences both external and internal.
I say this especially because people seem to think that assimilated immigrants, don't change the local culture or rather, shouldn't. It never works this way.
