BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (WKRC) - A man who was accused of murdering and eating his victim over a decade ago was granted a conditional release, a decision which some are calling "mind-boggling."

Tyree Smith was arrested in 2012 in connection to the murder of Angel Gonzalez, who was found mutilated with a hatchet in a vacant apartment. Smith's cousin testified that Smith told her he ate the victim's eyeball and part of his brain, leading to Smith being found not guilty by reason of insanity, and ordered to a forensic hospital for 60 years.

The Psychiatric Security Review Board of Connecticut granted Smith conditional release on Friday after Smith's psychiatrist claimed that his schizophrenia and substance abuse issues had been largely solved through medication and treatment.

The conditions of Smith's release mean that although he will be placed back into a public setting, he will be under strict supervision and will be required to continue treatment.

The board's decision was quickly met with pushback and outrage from Gonzalez's family and lawmakers alike.

"How do we really know he's not going to do this again?" Gonzalez's sister in law asked in a hearing with the board.

In a statement from multiple Republican legislators the decision was labelled "outrageous" and "mind-boggling."
