Is the economy much worse that we can see on the surface? I saw a shop lifter in a food store get caught stealing cheese.

The economy has clearly worsened over the last few years. Security is tighter everywhere, from pay-at-the-pump gas stations to grocery stores locking up merchandise. I recently visited a high-end local market that hired a security guard two years ago. Today, I watched them catch a woman stealing cheese. After initially fighting the guard, she broke down crying when the stolen item fell from her coat. It was a sad reminder that many people are struggling. With more guards, locked cabinets, and pre-payment requirements, the signs of economic stress are impossible to ignore."

Ask any AI search engine. The reason they spiked immigration in 2023 is because canada was entering into a recession, however the mathematical equation for a recession involves population growth, so by adding huge numbers of people, the formula says we're fine.... even though its counter intuitive, since when the economists came up with the equation they never pondered it would be possible to import people in such huge quantities.
Then ask it about individual debt and it'll explain we ---as individuals--- entered a financial crisis in 2023... And here we are 3 years later. The unemployment rate isnt so bad; they argue the numbers show its improving... But its because so many people have run out of assistance and have compleyely given up looking for work; So theyre no longer counted as 'unemployed' by the mathematical equation.

Not only more guards, I am seeing more armed guards. Not only at high-end places - many things have for sure declined over the past few decades, especially latest decade!

Everything has gone up.

I was renting a 1 BR apartment in Toronto for $800 ten years ago. Today that same apartment is triple that. It's insane.

Food has gone up as well. I remember McDonald's being around $8 a meal not too long ago. Today, it's almost double that. Eating out at a decent restaurant is at least $40 with tip for one person.

Gone are the days when I could buy whatever meat I wanted. Beef, salmon, and even chicken are now getting too expensive.

Car insurance is a joke, I pay $2500 a year for collision only, and I have no tickets or accidents.

How are people surviving?

I suspect that we are no where near the end of bad times. After going through a pandemic where the governments of the world spent massive amounts of money, then we were cursed with Trump's tariffs and now his wars to worsen the world economy. The world economy will not even begin to heal before we rid ourselves of the toxic orange tumor Trump. If it was not for Trump, the economy might be on its way to recovery now.

You used to live in the best country however over the last 10 years we have seen a dramatic decline in our standard of living.
I totally agree. Used to be a proud Canadian. Don’t feel that way any more. I think I made the right decision to no longer be a full time Canadian resident. Though a part of me still misses Toronto very much. I guess I’m feeling nostalgic of how things were back in the 90’s and 2000’s. Covid was clearly the turning point when the inflation spike hit but even though I didnt feel it, hard times were already in place for many Canadians from likely 2010. Canadian gov is clearly to blame , taking a rich country and slowing destroying it with taxes, over regulation and bad immigration policies. Saw a stat recently that Canadian poverty rate is on par with some 3rd world countries. Looks like Canada has finally arrived - 3rd World Status. Given the optics of homeless shanty towns in the very major city park in TO, the 3rd World Status is indisputable. Watch what happens with wave of young people leaving for better opportunities elsewhere. When money and young talent starts to leave, a countries future becomes bleak.

….also, a contributing factor to Canadian bad times is the destruction of the wealth effect. Poor people are Poor, Middle Class is strapped with debt and loss of buying power and the Rich simply stop spending because of declining asset values and simply bad vibes across the economy and society as a whole. Sadly, a bleak future is an understatement!
