I much prefer DST for the extra hour of light at night, and the extra hour of dark in the early morning.

I vote for permanent DST!

My son, who works in the trades, and goes to bed at 8pm cuz he has to wake up at 4:30am to get ready for work might not agree...

Is there anyone who favours going back and forth between Standard Time and Daylight Savings Time? There must be one or two, but it does seem that the vast majority of us hate it. We should pick one and stick with it.
I agree Ontario should do the same… let’s just stick to one and call it a day

What would happen if we didn’t move the clock forward?
If we stayed on Eastern Standard Time all year long:

Compared to previous years' DST months, the sun would set one hour earlier in the evening, and would rise one hour earlier in the morning.

For that same period, if we stay on EST all- year-round we will be one hour "out-of-sync" with Quebec DST time and the U. S. states that switch to DST every year.

I believe the original concept of DST was to give the farmers an extra hour in the fields in the summer, and going back to Standard Time was so that kids wouldn't have to walk in the dark to school in the winter.

I lived in Queensland Australia for 4 years. Near the equator, no dst.
So summer sun would come up at 3:30am set 7:30pm

Did the farmer really need to a change in the time to stay in his fields? Would he not just farm as much as possible in daylight hours - getting up with sunrise and if it was still dark and fields need finishing he could turn on his headlights.

Or would he be like "dang its so annoying getting out of bed at 7am and not being able to finish getting the crops in!"

I never understood the farmer argument. I think someone made it up.

Apparently Ontario passed a law in November 2020 to make DST permanent all year round, but it’s dependent on Quebec and New York State doing do as well.

Keeping DST all year means that it will be dark for a long time in the morning during the winter months. People will be going to work/school in the dark.

Exactly... it's be debunked over and over. It dates back to WW1 and coal use. Or read history and see how every culture manipulated their "clocks" for various reasons.

Permanent DST is a problem all year round. The sun is never directly overhead at midday like it should be. We should keep standard time all year round it’s better for circadian rhythms.

Yeah, I believe that's the one.

I had no idea about Quebec finally passing it, wonder what's keeping New York from accepting it.
Because it’s a stupid idea. Northern cities have little benefit except for a couple months in the summer. Places like Florida and Texas benefits because people can golf until almost 9pm. That reason is the main one as to why it’s even still a thing. Farmers don’t care and actually prefer standard time as do the animals.

Do recall, that leaving the clocks on DST makes it much darker in the mornings when the kids are going to school. I've always suggested that moving the clocks my 30 minutes one more time to split the difference would be a good way to end this twice annual changing of the clocks.

Everyone asking for permanent DST will complain the first day their precious kids have to walk to school at 8am in the dark. Then the government will change it back.

I also think it should just be standard time.
But at this point, I would settle for one time the entire year. Whatever that time is lol.
