They get killed and they will keep coming back.
That's the american theory, which is why they thought it would be an easy win.
The other theory is that Iran has been prepping for a war against Netanyahu for 40 years. Over the last few years they have shown restraint with all attacks, responding with the most minimal way possible to avoid escalating. This time they told trump that if there is any attack they would go all out. Looks like they learned from June last year and know how to fire volleys of slower rockets to make Israel and the states waste their expensive and very limited missile defences. Now it appears Iran is hitting Israel at will.

The command and government structure of Iran is stable. They had multiple layers of people in a command chain, and regional commanders were given orders and autonomy to operate with.
The big question is ammo. And ability to keep patrolling 24 hours to continue to hunt and try to stop missile attacks.
