How much in lawyer bills did the Crown put him through before they dropped the charges though??
Exactly! Beyond that how much did it cost him mentally? Anything that costs you your peace of mind is too expensive.

At least it set a precedence. Hopefully people will now think twice before entering someone's home armed with a weapon and bad intentions.

I seem to recall that the intruder had a history of encounters with the law, and maybe an ongoing substance abuse habit monkey on his back?

I recall the same thing. Hopefully being in the hospital for a long recovery removed said monkey.

If you're in your home where else can you retreat to? Run outside? What if they have accomplices? The laws need to change, we should also consider that career criminals have a huge advantage. If a criminal breaks into your home they have the element of surprise, more than likely have experience fighting and doing these sort of things, and probably have a higher tolerance for pain and possibly on drugs. Why is a normal law abiding citizen expected to know the law better than the crown? Be able to stop an intruder and know when the perpetrator is no longer a threat better than the police? I've seen plenty of fights when I was younger where a dude gets knocked down and gets back up and eventually wins the fight. It doesn't make any sense.

My guess, he will get a much more lenient sentence than the couple who killed kittens and sold videos online (I remember a thread a couple of weeks ago, I think they got 8 years). After all, kittens are more important than people.

And what if the intruder is a 100kg man and the homeowner is a 50kg women? She has no chance against the guy without a gun, even if he has no weapons at all. I wonder what the law says about her using the gun in this case. IMHO, it is a proportionate use of force.
