A Toronto man, who’s traveling abroad, reached out to Speakers Corner after his credit card was frozen. It happened shortly after he paid his entire balance. Pat Taney reports.
Why did you suffer with the situation for 20 years?for 20 years Scotiabank keep taking my money from my account labeled "debit memo" every time i call or visit Scotiabank they refuse to tell me where my money is going using privacy rules as an excuse. they keep saying it is a joint account when it is not. i had to close that account and start a new one for them stop this debit memo theft
Why did you suffer with the situation for 20 years?
I would have closed my account went the problem started and went to another bank.
I guess once the drama teacher authorized their illegal over reach they realized they can do what ever they want with impunity. Worst part? Unless you can get the news channel involved and give them bad publicity it's just like what they told him. 'tough luck'. 'It's my money, and I WANT IT NOW!'Expect more goofy and "oops, sorry, not sorry, not our fault" type shit to happen when it comes to banking.
That would be the best approach if he didn't have to worry about his credit rating. It's pretty fucking disgusting what banks can get away with these days. You trust them with your money because their supposed to be reputable but that's deteriorating rapidly. He should max out the credit card, then default on it.
Teach them a lesson on who not to play with.

If I was in that situation I would definitely give that a try but realistically what do you think is the ratio of people that call vs the number of people that actually get help?Call Pat Foran CTV Consumers Alert.

With the amount of nonsense that goes on I don't see how he would have the ability to follow up on every call but it sure would be helpful if that was the case.As far as I know, he always follows up and helps to call the bank to resolve the issue and most of the time, he made a presentation of the case on TV particularly when he
gets things resolved. Even not resolved, he will air the result and in most cases the banks cave in.
I definitely will call him when I have an issue.

I always wondered that myself. I keep two “good” credit cards on me at all times. The guy really is taking a huge risk being out of country with only 1 CC. What if he loses it? How quickly does a bank get you a new card when you're out of the country?
He's retired and lives out the country for 6 months. His credit rating will go to hell, if her did that.

Just like software licensing, I wonder how many people actually read the entire TOS/contract when signing a CC agreement. I remember when working in Enterprise IT, many years ago, there was a photo editing software that a user wanted. They had a free version even for commercial use. It was not open source. When we reviewed the license agreement there was one single line buried half way down the page stating something like "any images processed with this software become property of said company" or some legal jargon.I hate to say it but owning a credit card is not a right, its a privilege.
The credit card companies are under no obligation to keep your card active if they don't want to.
I'm not saying thats fair, or that its right, but thats the way it is.
This is why I always travel with 3 credit cards, and lots of cash
