Weird Question: Metal Exterior Door Piece Name?

What's the vertical strip of metal called at the bottom of a doorway that faces the outside, is about 1/4 to 1/2" high (probably varies by door), is smooth with little screws attaching it to the door threshold (not the door itself), and runs the entire width of the doorway? It's the vertical piece that faces outside (not the metal footplate/under door threshold that you step on when you enter). It's the part that remains outside the door (exposed to the elements), down at the bottom near the ground.

The one I need to replace is bent outwards in the centre (probably screw missing and now it's badly bent) but I have no idea what it's called.

Anyone know?

Hmm can't picture the item with your description, especially when it runs the width of the door but you describe it as vertical.

Quite possible it's unique to the door threshold.

  • Threshold Stop Strip: A specialized, low-profile strip (sometimes called a "stop strip") that is screwed directly onto the main threshold to create a seal against the door.
  • Adjustable Threshold: The small screws you mentioned often adjust a wooden or vinyl insert on the threshold, allowing it to move up and down to create a tight seal against the bottom of the door, as mentioned in.
  • Threshold Reducer/Transition Strip: If it is a thin piece used to bridge the gap between the threshold and the floor, it is called a transition strip or reducer.

It’s called a door sweep.

So far no bingo. Here's a pik:

That looks like a custom bit of metal TBH. I'd suspect that door 25 year+ old.

If that L-shape piece of metal isn't supporting the threshold in anyway structurally (as in, once it's removed is the sill more flexible?) then simply remove and place a bead of caulking down.

If not, you could reach out to a competent lumber / hardware store and they could fashion you something, or a fascia/soffit/eavestrough trade could easily make you that as well.

You might find a compatible piece in a good tile store, as tile edge transitions.
Down side is it will likely be sold in 6' or 12' lengths.

I dont understand, you say it is a VERTICAL piece, but then that it runs side to side - isn't that then a HORIZONTAL piece.

Is it vertical as you mentioned, or is it horizontal running side to side?

It looks like the metal strip is a custom piece. Usually the threshold has a tapered or rounded edge where it meets the floor. Yours has a gap, so the strip was added to prevent water, bugs from entering the house.
If you can't source a custom piece. Here's a possible solution.
Remove the damaged strip, spray foam the void between the threshold and concrete. Spray foam will deteriorate when exposed to the elements, so remove about quarter to half inch of foam under the front edge. Fill this void with non shrink grout which protects the foam and adds support.
Finally caulk the joint where the grout meets the concrete.

It looks like they flashed the original wood threshold when they installed a new door and jamb. You probably have a concrete porch and the threshold covers the concrete seam between the house and concrete porch. I had something similar on one of my houses.

I have that same piece. It came with the door assembly (door and frame). Try Home Depot, although you may not be able to buy the part separately from the entire frame.
