Rapid urban is currently roiling many countrys including Japan. However, I would not expect the Japanese to share this sentiment that I mentioned previously as they are forward thinking, but below the surface, it is there and has shaped post 1945 Japan until today. The
”lost generation” in Japan are now in the late 30s to mid 40s and they did not procreate much for some of the reasons that I mentioned as well as what you have alluded to.
Remember that Japan had democracy imposed on them by the victorious Allied Forces, mostly America’ s will through MacArthur and fast forward to Trump who reminds Japan that despite their. massive investment in the US Treasury , that Japan remains somewhat of a vassal state of America. Japan has a Pacifist constitution but they cannot re-arm without US permission for reasons similar to why the Allies are still in Germany.
Imagine what weapons Japan would have had they put their brilliant technical acumen that developed the Shinkansen and the Hyabusa project towards military weapons. The US was terrified that Stalin would have taken Japan in 1945 and acquired their prolific and prodigious industrial might.
