The Canucks are the worst team on the planet. To gauge anything with the way the leafs played them is impossible.

Precisely why if they had lost there would have been an outcry for a rebuild right here right now no delay do it pronto sell everything. Oh, and fire Berube.

Tampa down 5-1, wind up beating Boston 6-5, in the shootout.

Point didn't play. Hedman played limited minutes. TB dressed 11 forwards and Cirelli is injured mid-game.
For Boston Elias Lindholm and Zacha didn't play.
TB come back from a four goal deficit to take it to OT. Holmberg is out there in overtime and so is Minton.
Boston takes 2 penalties and TB gets 2 separate power plays.
Goes to shootout. Minton is Boston's second shooter.
Third shooter for TB Guentzel, US Olympian, scores on Swayman, US Olympian.
Third shooter for Boston Pastrnak makes excellent move on Vasilevsky but hits the post.
Boston gets 1 point and not 2.
Oh, and a goalie fight of course. All outdoors.

Columbus changed coach and hired Rick Bowness on Jan 13 this year and since then are 9-1-0
They may catch NYI for 3rd in the Division and make the playoffs. So, 4 points out of playoffs with a game in hand.
They're 2 points up on the Leafs with a game in hand. Leafs are for all intents out of the race.

This makes me wonder if the Leafs should try changing the head coach instead of selling off this year.

For whatever reason this is not even a discussion. No one has brought it up as an option.
Previously it was only buy or sell and now it's blow it up total rebuild or retool.
This can only mean one thing. Berube is coaching the Leafs next season.
His contract does go to end of 2028 season.

Vegas last 10 games 7 losses.
Of those 3 wins 2 were against Toronto.
The other Nashville a team worse than the Leafs.

There are 19 teams with 61 or fewer points. Leafs have 59.
It is not out of the realm of possibility when it's all said and done that Leafs win the lottery and still give that pick to Boston.
So if they miss the playoffs they have to be dam sure they're not in the pick 16 position. That would be a huge blunder. Ideally at least 11th. Imagine if it came down to game 82. Win it and they're in. Lose it and they pick 16th with no shot of lottery win. Leafs should have factored that in and protected minimum 6.

Tavares was flying out there in OT against Vancouver. Let's see what they do tonight without Reilly in Calgary. I think they get a win here

This is a better team with Nylander back and even better without Rielly. It may still fall short for making the playoffs but they can now say goodbye to their first round pick.

Nylander, Woll, and Rielly won this game for them.
They lose their first round pick regardless now or later and if later it's unprotected so could be worse.
Under those circumstances it's better to give it up now.
They may be in a full rebuild in 2 years when they can pick 1st round again considering every team in the Atlantic is improving. As a consolation they at least give Boston a lower pick
They would need to finish 3rd last to guarantee the pick
That's a lot of teams to pass that don't do a whole lot of winning.

Leafs are 7 points behind Boston. They lost both games to them in regulation this season.
The proverbial 4 point game times 2. There's your 8 point swing right there.

What's the Leafs record vs Atlantic teams? To be on top of the Atlantic, you have to beat all the Atlantic teams.
