I think I’ve seen enough to conclude that Treliving didn’t do well with the money he saved from losing Marner. It’d be a mistake to let OEL go if the intention is retooling rather than rebuilding. He’s been their best overall d man this year and the only one playing with a mean edge.
Treliving didnt get the kind of players needed to play the Berube systems. Too many defensively unreliable players.

Boston is a well run oiled machine. While Leafs have a history of inept GM's. Leafs are the only team to draft 3 players from the same Junior team all in the first round. That was Burke who thought he hit the jackpot with Tyler Biggs. He wanted Big so he picked one up with an extra g and plural. I'm not aware of any other team trading away a first round pick in order to get rid of a player. Who trades a first round pick and a prospect to have someone play on the 4th line.

Boston does have a history of drafting good players beyond the first round. Marchand and Bergeron are good examples of this. Pasternak was a late first round pick too. But every team does whiffed once in a while and Boston did big time in the 2015 draft. Another thing they do well is develop young talent fast.
