No way you keep Nylander over Matthews.
Either way, you get rid of one, the other will be gone too, neither guy will want to stick around for a rebuild.
It's not a retool, they are short on way too many pieces up front and especially back, except for goalie.
I want them all gone. They had a decade and it's over. I'm done kidding myself with this group.

If I were the GM I'd look to rebuild but keep the following players because I like and/or believe in them

Tavares (restored with the captaincy)
Knies
McMann
Cowan
Tanev
McCabe
Benoit
Laughton (maybe)

I'd start off by shopping Matthews, Nylander, OEL because they have the highest market value. I'd ask Rielly to waive his no trade clause and if he doesn't I'd consider two things. 1) buy him out or 2) convert him to forward.
My first target would be MacKenzie Weegar in Calgary. His value is at an all time low and I am confident in a full rebound. Then I would look at drafting an offensive slick dman who can quarterback the PP.
In free agency I would look at signing Adrian Kempe and bringing back Mason Marchment.

Good thing you're not the GM.

Yep, when I say "gut" the team, I mean it. Outside Knies, Laughton (other Leafs should give the effort he gives) and their goalies, everyone is expendable. What sucks is that outside maybe OEL, I doubt any player outside Nylander and Matthews are even worth 1st round picks.

In a few years, we went from an enviable roster to one of the worst constructed in the NHL. It can happen that fast. All those NTCs that Shanahan/Dubas gave out like candy have come back to haunt them.

Tavares wanted to stay. It obviously wasn't about the money for him at this stage. Probably because his family with young kids wants to stay. Matthews is not just captain of the Leafs. He's captain of the U.S. National team. It was a natural transition to move the captaincy from Tavares to Matthews. Tavares as captain has never won anything in NYI as well. Rielly at one time should have been captain but right now he shouldn't even be on the team.

Perfect time for a full blown rebuild when they don't have their next two 1st round draft picks and high picks at that. Precisely what's required for a rebuild. They should be rebuilding when Matthews contract expires in 2 years and they have their own draft picks. There's no way they're rebuilding right now. It'll be a retool. However, Treliving is not the guy to do this. He's Shanahan's guy. There was zero effort put in to hire a replacement for Dubas. Change the GM and coach and see what they have next year.

Pronger thinks Rielly's issues are that he's up ice too much chasing offense. Players like Dahlin and Werenski are also up ice when the team is on offense. Rielly's problems go way beyond that. He lacks awareness. Can't read plays on the defensive side. Same problem Domi has. There's also lack of technical ability to defend. Leaving large gaps, backward skating turns, one on one net front coverage.

Tavares right now is an astounding -13. For comparison Rielly is -14 and Domi -16. Macelli is 4th worse on the team now at -9 and Knies is -8. The current 2nd line without Nylander consisting of Tavares, Maccelli, and a hobbled Knies has been terrible. They look tremendously slow.

It certainly looks like Leafs were wrong on Holmberg. He's 7th in goals playing on the 3rd line of the second best team in the league. He's also on the Swedish Olympic team. Leafs also turfed Kampf. Don't know why he didn't play 4th line center when Laughton was injured to start the season. Both players have their offensive deficiencies but excel defensively. Leafs this season are bottom rung on the defensive metrics.

Minton is currently 4th on Boston in goals 1 behind 3rd. He's also +17 which is the 2nd best on the team and 5th in ice time for forwards. He's 21, 6'2", 204 lbs and probably already better than Roy. He's precisely the type of player you want in a retool or rebuild.

Tavares was terrible captain, he didn't show no leadership, lack of playoffs success.
MATTHEWS, NYLANDER, TAVARES, RIELLY ALL NEEDS TO GO LOL 🤣🤣🤣

It all makes sens(e) now why Ottawa's playoff odds are so much better than Leafs even though they have the exact same record 53 games 57 points. Ottawa is 30% Leafs 4.3%
Ottawa has a good team. The only thing holding them back is goaltending. They've used 5 goalies this season. Of them Ullmark has the best save percentage but it's a pitiful .881
Against Colorado Ottawa only allowed 18 shots. Reimer let in 2.
Against Vegas Ottawa only allowed 20 shots while shooting 31 at Vegas. This was only Soggard's 2nd game of the season. He let in 1. The othe game he played he let in 5.
So, Ottawa can play good defense. They can limit opposition shots. The only thing missing from them is goaltending and their PK which is probably goaltending related.

Ok did I read this correctly, Nick Kypreos wants Leafs to trade Woll for Binnington?
There are plenty of reasons not to listen to Kypreos but this one has gotta be up there.
He also states Woll in a package. Is he implying Leafs would need to give up more than just Woll.
Woll has been good his whole career albeit only 125 NHL games. That includes the playoffs when he came in for Samsonov. Even this season he's been good. Aside from the last 4 games he played. So based on his last 4 games according to Kypreos he should be traded in a package for Binnington. He of a .867 save percentage in 30 games this season. How is this a good trade.

I don't listen to Kypreos. I think he's up there as one of the worst. I'm reading Trevor's post.

I'm not a Leafs fan but i think is the worst NHL team to play for . The Toronto sports media are mostly to blame, too much pressure to play for them.
The media are clowns, needs back down . had enough with they BS talks
think about it if they no pressure from the so called clowns media, The Leafs will probably perform better.

I've seen the Toronto sports media just fawn over this team and their players. Hardly as tough as NY is on Yankee players or the Dallas media is with Cowboy players either. Think the NY or Chicago media would have let Matthews avoid speaking the day of Marners return to Toronto?

So if these players do indeed view the media as part of the problem, then find me mentally tougher players.

I like Kypreos. I really enjoy watching and listening to the real Kyper and Bourne show. I happen to like Sportsnet. I like J.D Bunkis, Blake Murphy, Ailish Forfar, Kyper, Sammy Mckee, and Justin Bourne etc

On TSN, I like Noodles, the O-Dog, and Hayes. I also like Mike Johnson and Gord Miller, who I think do a great job, on the TSN Leafs TV broadcasts.
All of them are clowns, all these toronto sports talk shows are just trash.
